“The mother of pilgrims”: at 85, Maritxu keeps walking the Camino de Santiago

Her story is not about distance… it’s about life, resilience and a promise that never ended

The Camino de Santiago is full of stories. Some are brief, others unforgettable.

And then there are stories like hers.

At 85 years old, Maritxu, a pilgrim from the Basque Country, is once again walking towards Santiago. Not for the first time… but after decades of returning, step by step, year after year.

For many on the Camino, she is no longer just another pilgrim.

She is “the mother of pilgrims”.

A promise that became a life path

Her journey did not begin as an adventure.

It began with a promise.

After overcoming a serious illness years ago, Maritxu made a simple commitment: if she recovered, she would walk the Camino de Santiago.

She kept her word.

And she never stopped.

What started as a single pilgrimage turned into a lifelong journey that continues to this day.

More than numbers, a way of being

While many speak about how many Caminos she has completed, numbers are not what define her.

It is her spirit.

Her energy.
Her smile.
Her determination to keep moving forward.

She walks with the same enthusiasm as someone starting for the first time, reminding everyone around her that the Camino is not about age or limits.

A living inspiration on the Camino

As she continues her journey through places like Vigo, her presence naturally draws attention. Pilgrims stop to talk to her, to listen, to take in her story.

Because she represents something powerful:

That the Camino has no age.
That strength comes from within.
That it is never too late to begin… or to continue.

The Camino as a way of life

For Maritxu, the Camino is not a challenge to overcome.

It is a way of living.

Walking gives her purpose, joy and a sense of connection that goes far beyond the physical journey.

And that message resonates deeply with those who meet her along the way.

A story that defines the spirit of the Camino

The Camino de Santiago has changed over time, welcoming new generations, new motivations and new ways of walking.

But stories like this remind everyone of its true essence.

It is not about speed.
It is not about records.

It is about meaning.

When the journey never ends

Some pilgrims complete the Camino and return home.

Others… become part of it.

Maritxu belongs to that second group.

Because her journey is no longer just her own.

It is now part of the soul of the Camino itself.
