Hollywood star helped put the Camino and Galicia on the international map
Long before social media influencers began discovering the Camino de Santiago, Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow was already helping introduce Galicia to an international audience.
In the late 2000s, the Oscar-winning actress traveled across Galicia while filming the television documentary series Spain… On the Road Again, a project created to showcase Spain’s culture, gastronomy, history, and lesser-known destinations. One of the most memorable episodes focused on Galicia and the world-famous Camino de Santiago.

A pilgrimage route that captivated Hollywood
The episode, titled Pilgrimage to Galicia, highlighted the unique atmosphere of the Camino de Santiago and the spiritual journey that attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year. Viewers were introduced not only to Santiago de Compostela and its historic cathedral but also to the landscapes, traditions, and rural communities that make Galicia one of Europe’s most fascinating regions.
The documentary followed Paltrow as she explored authentic Galician culture, moving beyond the typical tourist attractions and focusing on local life, food, and the experience of pilgrimage. Her visit helped expose millions of American viewers to the Camino de Santiago at a time when the route was far less known internationally than it is today.
A special connection with Galicia
One of the locations featured during the filming was the rural guesthouse A Parada das Bestas in the province of Lugo. The visit became so memorable that the accommodation is still associated with the actress years later. During filming, Paltrow embraced local traditions, enjoyed Galician cuisine, and experienced firsthand the hospitality that pilgrims encounter along the Camino.
The documentary also showcased Galicia’s reputation as a land shaped by the sea, agriculture, and centuries of pilgrimage history. For many international viewers, it was their first introduction to the region and its unique identity.
Why the Camino mattered
For Galicia, the appearance of a major Hollywood star on one of America’s public television networks provided valuable international exposure. The Camino de Santiago was presented not simply as a walking route, but as a life-changing experience combining culture, spirituality, history, gastronomy, and personal discovery.
Tourism experts often point to international media exposure as one of the factors that helped increase global awareness of the Camino during the last two decades. Today, pilgrims arrive in Santiago de Compostela from more than 180 countries, making the Camino one of the world’s most international pilgrimage routes.
A lasting legacy
Years after her visit, Gwyneth Paltrow’s journey through Galicia remains a reminder of how powerful the Camino de Santiago can be in connecting people from different cultures and backgrounds.
What began as a television documentary became part of the story of how Galicia and the Camino reached audiences far beyond Spain. And for many viewers around the world, it was one of the first invitations to discover the magic of the yellow arrows leading to Santiago de Compostela.
