A personal pilgrimage becomes a message beyond borders
The Camino de Santiago has witnessed countless personal stories over the centuries, but some journeys go far beyond individual transformation. In 2026, a Cuban pilgrim has drawn attention after completing the route and dedicating his entire journey to a deeply personal and political intention: calling for change in Cuba.
Yenkys González, a worker from the Diocese of Santa Clara, walked nearly 800 kilometers along the Camino Francés, starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and reaching Santiago de Compostela after more than a month on the road.
His journey, however, was not only about reaching Santiago.
Walking with a purpose
According to his own testimony, González undertook the pilgrimage as a spiritual offering, carrying with him a constant thought: the situation in his home country.
Throughout the entire Camino, he said he prayed and reflected on Cuba’s reality, asking for “change in any form.”
This intention turned his walk into something more than a traditional pilgrimage.
It became:
- a personal act of faith
- a symbolic gesture
- and a message that resonates beyond the Camino

A rare presence on the Camino
Cuban pilgrims remain a minority on the Camino de Santiago.
Travel restrictions, economic limitations, and the high cost of long-distance travel make it difficult for residents of the island to undertake such journeys.
For this reason, González’s presence on the Camino was unusual from the very beginning. Even during registration, he reportedly attracted attention for being Cuban.
His journey was made possible thanks to an invitation from a fellow member of his religious community, highlighting how access to the Camino is not equally available to everyone.
A journey marked by contrast
During his walk, González described moments that deeply impacted him.
He spoke about the contrast between what he saw in Europe and everyday life in Cuba. Simple scenes, such as trees full of fruit, reminded him of shortages back home, where, as he explained, many families struggle to access basic goods.
These reflections became a constant companion along the route.
Spiritual moments along the Camino
Like many pilgrims, González experienced moments he interpreted as meaningful or symbolic.
One of these took place in O Cebreiro, one of the most iconic villages on the Camino Francés. Inside the church, he lit a candle and remained there in silence, reflecting on his journey and his intentions.
He later described unexpected encounters that he perceived as signs—moments that reinforced his belief that his prayers had been heard.

The Camino as a voice
What makes this story stand out is not the distance covered, but the meaning behind it.
The Camino de Santiago has always been a space where personal stories unfold. For some, it is about faith. For others, about challenge or self-discovery.
In this case, it became a platform.
A way to express:
- concern
- hope
- and a desire for change
Without slogans or demonstrations, but through the act of walking itself.
Returning home with the same purpose
After completing the Camino, González returned to Cuba, where he continues his work and daily life.
Despite being asked why he would go back after such an experience, he made it clear that leaving the country was not his goal.
His journey was not about escape.
It was about connection.
A story that reflects a broader reality
While this is a personal story, it also reflects a wider context.
Cuba continues to face economic and social challenges that affect daily life for many of its citizens.
In this context, individual actions—like this pilgrimage—can take on a broader meaning.
The Camino beyond borders
The Camino de Santiago remains a place where different realities meet.
People arrive from all over the world, each carrying their own stories, struggles, and motivations.
Some walk for faith.
Others for adventure.
And some, like González, walk with a message.
A journey that speaks without words
In the end, this story is not about politics in the traditional sense.
It is about what the Camino allows.
A space where a single person, walking step by step, can turn a personal journey into something that resonates far beyond the road.
Because sometimes, the most powerful messages are not shouted.
They are walked.
