Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Família has reached a historic milestone, officially becoming the tallest Christian temple in the world after more than 144 years of construction.
With the completion and inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ, the masterpiece designed by renowned architect Antoni Gaudí now rises to an impressive 172.5 metres, surpassing Germany’s Ulm Minster, which had previously held the record as the world’s tallest church.
The achievement marks one of the most significant moments in the history of the basilica, coinciding with the centenary of Gaudí’s death in 2026. The symbolic culmination of the tower represents not only an architectural triumph but also a tribute to the visionary genius who devoted much of his life to the project.
A dream over a century in the making
Construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882, and although Gaudí transformed the original design into one of the most extraordinary religious buildings ever conceived, he was fully aware that he would never see it completed.
Today, generations of architects, craftsmen and engineers have continued his legacy, combining traditional techniques with modern technology to bring his vision closer to reality.
The newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ is crowned by a striking white cross made of glass and ceramic, adding a distinctive silhouette to Barcelona’s skyline. True to Gaudí’s philosophy, the tower was deliberately designed to remain slightly lower than Montjuïc Hill, reflecting his belief that human creations should never surpass the work of God.

Although the completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ represents a major milestone, work on other parts of the basilica is still ongoing. Interior finishing works, the monumental Glory Façade, and additional elements envisioned by Gaudí remain under development.
Nevertheless, for many visitors and residents of Barcelona, this moment signifies the fulfilment of a dream that has spanned nearly a century and a half.
