From Forgotten Station to Pilgrim's Lighthouse! Obejo Revitalizes His Past to Promote the Mozarabic Path
Obejo, Córdoba. An ambitious project is transforming the historic old Obejo station, in the idyllic setting of the Guadanuño reservoir (near Cerro Muriano), in a brand new Pilgrim Interpretation Center and Hostel. A giant step for the municipality that not only recovers an emblematic space, but also turns it into a nerve center for the Camino de Santiago through the Mozarabic Route.
The works, which are already progressing at a good pace with 30-40% completion, will give a second life to these railway facilities, which have been closed for decades. The responsible engineer, David Tarrías, confirms the progress of this project financed with European funds and made a reality thanks to a transfer agreement with ADIF. The objective is clear: to provide the area with tourist, cultural and social facilities that will be a meeting point for neighbors, visitors and, of course, for pilgrims who begin their Jacobean adventure from Córdoba.

Rescuing the Past, Building the Future
The rehabilitation of the station is being carried out with deep respect for its heritage value. The intervention seeks to return the railway complex (composed of the passenger building, the old canteen and the attached house) to its original splendor, adapting it to its new function. Tarrías highlights the challenge of "finding materials that maintain the essence of the construction", a meticulous task to preserve the authenticity of the place.
Although some parts of the building were more deteriorated than expected, requiring additional actions, the commitment to the project is total. Although these complexities could slightly influence the timeline, the delivery date, expected at the end of 2025, remains a firm target.
An Intelligent Design: Interpretation Center and Integrated Hostel
The future Pilgrim Center is conceived as a double and functional space. He restored historic building will house the Interpretation Center, offering visitors detailed information about the Camino de Santiago, the rich history of the station and the tourist attractions of the area, as well as a small municipal office.
At his side, a second newly built building, whose design pays homage to the original architecture, will go to the hostel. It will have two rooms, each with capacity for four people (two bunk beds per room), a social room with an office and toilets. This hostel is designed to be an oasis of rest and preparation for pilgrims who choose this unique enclave to begin or continue their route to Santiago.
A Revulsion for Obejo and the Mozárabe Route
For David Tarrías, the opening of this center will represent "a shock to local life." It is expected to attract both organized groups and individual pilgrims, consolidating the importance of the Mozarabic Way as it passes through the province of Córdoba. Furthermore, the rehabilitation of the station will return to the community a building full of memory and history, which was once vital for the region's railway communications.
The Obejo Pilgrim Interpretation Center is not only a work of infrastructure; It is an act of heritage recovery, a tourism boost and a new beacon of hospitality in the heart of the Camino de Santiago.
