The Camino de Santiago once again receives sad news. A pilgrim died this Monday, September 28, while walking the French Way as it passed through Najera, in La Rioja. The woman needed medical assistance when she was on the Camino de la Magdalena, at the exit of the town in the direction of Azofra.
According to the information known so far, the death occurred due to natural causes. Despite the rapid mobilization of emergency services and the efforts of health personnel, it was not possible to save his life.
The emergency services went to the Camino de la Magdalena
The emergency services were notified around 10:20 in the morning, after the pilgrim needed assistance while making her journey.
A mobile ICU was sent to the scene with health professionals who tried to treat her given the seriousness of the situation. Unfortunately, medical teams were only able to confirm his death.
Members of the Civil Guard also attended and intervened after the event occurred.
At the moment, the identity, age or nationality of the woman have not been publicly disclosed. No additional medical details have been provided regarding the specific circumstances of his death.
Nájera, a town deeply linked to the French Way
The event occurred in one of the usual exit sections of Nájera, a Riojan town closely linked to the history of the Jacobean pilgrimage.
Thousands of walkers cross its streets every year before continuing towards Azofra, Santo Domingo de la Calzada and, later, the lands of Castilla y León.
It is a route that is part of the daily experience of numerous pilgrims who advance towards Santiago de Compostela.
This Monday, however, the day was marked by the death of a woman who was making her own pilgrimage.
The Camino also shares difficult moments
Each pilgrim begins the Camino de Santiago with a personal story, motivations and different circumstances. Some seek a spiritual experience, others want to see new places and many find in the pilgrimage an opportunity to share time, effort and encounters with people from all over the world.
News such as what happened in Nájera also reminds us of the human dimension of the Camino and the importance of the work carried out by health professionals and emergency services in the territories crossed by the Jacobean routes.
At times like this, above any consideration, it is appropriate to show respect towards the deceased person and towards those who may be going through the pain of their loss.
From RTV Camino de Santiago we convey our most sincere condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.
May Santiago keep you. Rest in peace.
