The Camino de Santiago: A journey where we are all equal

The famous Camino de Santiago: On the Camino de Santiago, differences fade. No matter fame, money or status: upon arriving at Praza do Obradoiro, all pilgrims share the same look of fatigue, emotion and silence in front of the Cathedral.

This unique journey transcends borders and biographies, driven by diverse motivations: promises, duels, internal searches and physical challenges. And it is in this context where the stories of public figures who, like any other pilgrim, have decided to walk, also emerge. Whether alone or with a light backpack, capturing moments with their cell phones, these celebrities have sought something personal and intimate on the Camino.

Because yes, they too get tired, cry, pray and find each other. Some did it before they were known, others at the peak of their fame, and there were even those who experienced it for work. But all, at the end of the day, shared the essence of the pilgrim.

From the singer Rosalía to the actor Martin Sheen, including the former German chancellor Angela Merkel, the scientist Stephen Hawking, the writer Paulo Coelho or the streamers Ibai Llanos and El Xokas, their steps have been intertwined with those of millions of anonymous people in this melting pot of experiences that is the Camino.

Through their stories, we explore how the Camino, ultimately, does not distinguish names, but only recognizes interior paths.

Music and promises under the stars

Rosalía, long before her global fame, walked the Camino at 19 years old. His promise to the Apostle was clear: to dedicate himself to music. And the echo of his voice, years later, would resonate throughout the world, but it all began here, in Galicia, under the rhythm of footsteps on the earth.7287600

In the summer of 2009, singer David Bisbal also felt the call of the Camino, pedaling alongside cycling legends such as Miguel Induráin and Abraham Olano, in a solidarity initiative. For his part, the violinist Ara Malikian, in 2024, arrived in Santiago by bicycle, and decided to continue to Finisterre, accompanied only by his inseparable violin.

Actors in search of good stories

The magic of the Camino has captivated the big screen. In 2010, actor Martin Sheen starred in "The Way", directed by his son Emilio Estévez. The film, partly filmed on the route, has become a classic among pilgrims, for its story of mourning, redemption and beauty.

More recently, in August 2022, actor Mario Casas completed 260 kilometers of the Camino Francés, walking from Astorga to Santiago. The model and actor Jon Kortajarena, for his part, shared his pilgrimage with his followers in 2012, mixing landscapes, reflections and careful aesthetics.

Writers: between mysticism and the word

The Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho transformed his 1986 Camino into one of his most famous works: "The Pilgrim of Compostela", a book that fuses autobiography, spirituality and narrative. The Spanish author Fernando Sánchez Dragó also captured his experience in "Magical History of the Camino de Santiago" (1999).7287589

Believers, leaders and symbols

Pope John Paul II left an indelible mark on Compostela, visiting the city as a pilgrim in 1982 and returning in 1989 for the IV World Youth Day.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel symbolically participated in the tradition, walking a six-kilometer stretch from O Pedrouzo in 2014, alongside the then president of the Spanish government, Mariano Rajoy. And in 2010, the then princes Felipe and Letizia walked the last stretch from Lavacolla to Praza do Obradoiro, walking alongside anonymous pilgrims.

Science, networks and new forms of devotion

One of the most memorable moments involved the British physicist Stephen Hawking, who in 2008 symbolically walked a section of the Camino in his wheelchair during a visit to Galicia to receive an award, visiting the Cathedral and arriving in Finisterre, where a square was inaugurated in his honor.
