The Primitive Way is the second fastest growing
The Primitive Way is experiencing an unstoppable rise in the number of pilgrims. The data reveal an impressive increase of 121% between January and March compared to the same period in 2019. Analyzing the year 2024 as a whole, 56% more walkers were registered on this ancestral route compared to the 2019 figures. "We are the second route with the greatest growth, only surpassed by the Portuguese Coastal Way," said the Councilor for Tourism of Oviedo, Alfredo García Quintana, during the presentation of a recommendations manual prepared by the local business association. This manual seeks to establish basic but essential rules to consolidate and promote the Camino Primitivo as one of the most relevant routes.
Manuel López, in charge of detailing the recommendations, highlighted the importance of this ancient route to maintain economic activity in rural areas, thanks to the consumption of pilgrims in shops, businesses and accommodations. "All this influx of people revitalizes the towns and businesses along the way," he explained.
Among the key tips for pilgrims who venture on the Camino Primitivo, the need for adequate physical preparation to face the long walks is highlighted. "It is essential to adapt the stages to the physical condition of each person, avoiding forcing the pace to comply with pre-established itineraries," said López. Likewise, it is recommended to inform yourself about the services available along the route and not to overload your backpack, whose ideal weight should not exceed 10% of your body weight, carrying only what is strictly necessary.
As for your luggage, it is advisable to include light, breathable, easy-to-wash and quick-dry clothing, as well as hiking shoes already used to prevent chafing. Sunscreen, a cap or hat and a basic foot care kit should not be missing. For greater convenience, pilgrims can opt for backpack shipping services between stages, and even to airports or homes.
Regarding the use of mobile devices, López insisted on the importance of preventing battery discharge and previously downloading maps and route guides, since coverage may be limited in many areas. However, he recalled that the essential element is to enjoy the landscapes that connect the Cathedral of Oviedo with Santiago de Compostela, alluding to the well-known saying: "Whoever goes to Santiago and not to the Savior, visits the servant and leaves the lord."
