An alternative route that is already becoming the protagonist of the Camino de Santiago
The Spiritual Variant of the Camino de Santiago has ceased to be that secret that only some pilgrims knew to become one of the most sought after routes of 2026. The growth is evident: accommodations in the O Salnés area already register up to 50% reservations for Easter, something unthinkable just a few years ago.
What was once a quiet option within the Portuguese Way, today is beginning to position itself as one of the most special experiences for those looking for something different.
Nature, history and a unique experience on the Camino
This variant, of about 70 kilometers divided into three stages, offers a combination that is difficult to match: natural trails, historical heritage and a strong spiritual charge.
One of its most notable points is the well-known Ruta da Pedra e da Auga, a route between mills and vegetation that many pilgrims describe as one of the most beautiful sections of the entire Camino.
But if there is something that really makes the difference, it is its ending. Instead of continuing on foot, pilgrims can complete the last stage by boat along the Arousa estuary, symbolically following the route that, according to tradition, the remains of the Apostle Santiago took.
More and more foreign pilgrims
The growth of the Spiritual Variant is not coincidental. More and more international pilgrims are choosing it, attracted by its authenticity and by being a less crowded alternative.
Groups from different European countries are betting on this route, which is giving an increasingly international character to the area.
This increase is also helping to boost the local economy, especially in small municipalities that see demand for accommodation, restaurants and services for pilgrims growing.

A success without official recognition
Despite its popularity, the Spiritual Variant has a peculiarity: it still does not have official recognition within the statistics of the Camino de Santiago.
Even so, the figures leave no room for doubt. It is estimated that tens of thousands of pilgrims already travel there each year, and everything indicates that it will continue to grow.
2026, a key year
After winter, the municipalities have already prepared the route to receive the first pilgrims of the high season. And everything indicates that this year could mark a before and after.
More reserves, more visibility and more international interest are placing the Spiritual Variant on the definitive map of the Camino.
Because sometimes, on the Camino, the best routes are those that start out as an alternative... and end up becoming essential.
