More security for pilgrims in Palencia. By the time the company Julietma Obras y Contratas SL finishes the work of adapting the old national highway N-120 to pedestrian traffic as it passes through the town of Carrión de los Condes, to the PP-2411 highway where a parallel walkway was built a few years ago, the pilgrims as they pass through Palencia, from the moment they enter when crossing the Pisuerga through Puente Fítero, until they leave at San Nicolás del Real Camino, will not have to share (except in urban spaces) the same space as motor vehicles.
The Provincial Council of Palencia has just awarded the aforementioned company the contract to eradicate the last point in the province where pilgrims to Santiago have to share a road (without a sidewalk) with cars and trucks. A section of about 0.3 km in length along Avenida Donantes de Sangre and the old N-120; for the amount of €48,279.
Lastly, because although there is currently another small section in Itero de la Vega, where there is no choice but to share asphalt, the creation of a path parallel to the highway is already underway.
Thus, the coincidence of those who cross the province with the shell in their backpack with cars will be limited only to urban points (where the speed is limited to 30 or 50) and to the intersections with different highways.
At that point, the Palencia Provincial Council attacks with the award of another contract, which entails the installation of intelligent signage at those intersections of the Camino de Santiago with the provincially owned roads. As explained by the Palencia Provincial Council in a statement, "it is proposed to place a system of signals for detecting vehicles and pedestrians with volumetric radio frequency radars and solar power. Through this system the aim is to improve road safety by detecting, through sensors, both vehicles and pedestrians traveling along the Camino de Santiago. In this way, the signals will illuminate and alert pilgrims to the presence of vehicles at the crossing."
In the style of intelligent signs that have already been placed in other parts of the province on provincial highway crossings, but in this case also focused on pilgrims.
