When is the Pilgrim's Mass celebrated?
The Pilgrim's Mass is celebrated every day at 12:00 in the spiritual heart of the Cathedral of Santiago. It is a moment full of symbolism, in which pilgrims who have completed the Camino are honored at the beginning of the ceremony. In the past, there was a public reading of their names, nationalities and the points from where they began their journey.
This mass is not only a liturgical act, but also a space for pilgrims to express their gratitude for the journey, reflect on the challenges overcome and celebrate arriving at the long-awaited goal.

The Botafumeiro is one of the most iconic elements of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and a symbol of the great religious solemnities that are celebrated there. This imposing incense burner, whose name in Galician means "to blow smoke", has been used since the Middle Ages to purify the air in the cathedral, especially when large crowds of pilgrims arrived.
At 1.5 meters high and weighing 53 kilos, the Botafumeiro is one of the largest incense burners in the world. It is handled by eight men, known as "tirabboleiros", who swing it along the transept of the cathedral. During its impressive flight, the Botafumeiro reaches a speed of up to 68 kilometers per hour, describing an arc 65 meters long and achieving an angle of 82 degrees above the vertical.
The current Botafumeiro is a replica of the original from 1851, made by the goldsmith José Losada, and both are preserved in the Chapter Library of the cathedral, ready for their impressive display.
Botafumeiro Santiago, schedule: The Botafumeiro does not have a fixed daily schedule, since its use is reserved for special days or specific events. However, during the main liturgical festivities of the year, such as those mentioned above (Epiphany, Easter Sunday, Martyrdom of Saint James, Christmas, among others), the Botafumeiro is activated during the Pilgrim's Mass, normally at 12:00 p.m.
Furthermore, on special occasions, such as summer Fridays at 7:30 p.m., the Botafumeiro is also used thanks to agreements between the Santiago City Council and the Cathedral. Outside of these times, its use can be requested privately, after payment and coordination with the Pilgrim's Office.
Therefore, there is no standard daily "schedule", but if you are interested in seeing it in action, it is best to inquire about special dates or arrange a private request.
