Oviedo will reinforce its position as a Jacobean destination with the inauguration tomorrow of a new milestone on the Camino de Santiago. The president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, will be in charge of presenting this milestone, a sign that indicates the distance to Santiago de Compostela and that the Xunta is placing in important cities along the different routes of the Camino.
This initiative, launched by the Galician government in 2021 on the occasion of the Xacobeo , now arrives in Oviedo. The marker is already installed in a green area near the access to the Garden of the Caudillo Kings, a few meters from the Cathedral.
Alfonso Rueda will visit Oviedo at the end of the week and will take advantage of his presence in the city to participate in the official inauguration of the landmark. This milestone is considered a key element to strengthen the “Oviedo, origin of the Camino” brand, with which the City Council has been promoting the city as a cultural and religious destination for several years.
The location of the marker is strategic, as it is located near the Las Pelayas monastery, where the regional government plans to build a large hostel for pilgrims. According to sources from the Principality, the final project for this hostel is in its final phase of development.
