Union for Peace on the Way of Wool: Pilgrims from Ukraine and Russia Walk Together
The Wool Route, which crosses the province of Cuenca, has become the scene of a moving gesture of unity. Alina, a Ukrainian national, and Lidia, a Russian, pilgrims who began their journey in 2023, have returned this year to continue their journey together to Burgos, making a significant stop in the capital of Cuenca.
These two women, residents of Alicante, began their journey on the Camino de la Lana with a purpose that transcends personal boundaries. As Lidia explains, two years ago, together with two other friends (a Russian and an Azerbaijani), they started this route as a symbol of peace after the outbreak of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Lidia, who has also walked the Portuguese Way to Santiago alone, highlights the deep meaning of this pilgrimage for reconciliation.
The initial route was done in stages, starting in Biar (Alicante) and reaching Albacete, sections that Lidia completed before meeting Alina in Cuenca. In total, they traveled 400 kilometers to this point. In the stage they shared this year, they walked for six days, covering 160 kilometers from Cuenca to Mirabueno (Guadalajara), carrying their Pilgrim's Credential from Alicante.
Lidia describes the "magic" of the Camino de la Lana, a route they took "with pleasure" despite the harshness of the mountainous areas. The good signage in Cuenca and its surroundings stands out, as well as the kindness and mutual help between the pilgrims they encountered on their way. By 2025, its goal is to resume the route in the summer to reach Burgos and, in the future, reach Santiago de Compostela.
With a deep reflection on the war, Lidia expresses her desire for peace, recognizing that not everyone shares her vision. His experience with Alina on the Ruta de la Lana has been peaceful, crossing lonely towns where nature was his only company, but also enjoying the hospitality of the shelters, highlighting one as one of the best in his pilgrim experience. Lidia is also especially grateful for the help provided by Esther, the owner of a bar in Cifuentes, along her path.
