Pieros, in the middle of the French Way
The event occurred in Pieros, a small town belonging to the municipality of Cacabelos, in El Bierzo.
It is a point fully integrated into the layout of the French Way, located after Cacabelos in the direction of Villafranca del Bierzo. The historical and current references of the itinerary expressly include Cacabelos, Pieros and Villafranca among the places of passage on this Jacobean route.
In the middle of August, this section daily registers the passage of numerous pilgrims who continue towards Villafranca and later face the approach to Galicia through Vega de Valcarce and O Cebreiro.
A tragic morning on the Camino
In the absence of knowing more details about what happened, the news leaves a particularly sad day on the French Way.
Emergency services intervene every season in the event of falls, disorientation and health problems suffered by walkers. The official information for pilgrims includes an extensive network of health care distributed along the different Jacobean routes.
In this case, however, the intervention has not been able to prevent the worst outcome.
From Camino de Santiago RTV, we will continue to wait for any official information that allows us to know the circumstances of the death.
Our respect to family members, companions on the Camino and people who witnessed the event.
