Attention pilgrims: a fire forces the Camino to be cut

The flames in Mañeru generate moments of concern in one of the busiest areas of the French Way

The pilgrims who these days travel the French Way by Navarre have lived a day marked by concern after the major fire declared in the town of Mañeru, located in the heart of the Jacobean route between Puente la Reina and Cirauqui.

The fire forced the temporary shutdown of Camino Highway (A-12) due to the intense smoke that affected visibility and safety in the area. In addition, several homes had to be evacuated and a 56-year-old man was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke.

Although the fire was stabilized during the afternoon and traffic was later restored, the event has reminded us that the Camino de Santiago can also be affected by emergencies unrelated to the pilgrimage itself.

An area well known by pilgrims

Mañeru is one of the most emblematic towns of the French Way in Navarra. Every year thousands of pilgrims cross its streets after leaving Puente la Reina on their way to Estella, traveling through one of the best-known historical stages of the Jacobean route.

The proximity of the fire to the surroundings of the Camino generated concern among walkers and neighbors, especially due to the strong gusts of wind that favored the spread of the flames to areas of vegetation near the route.

Recommendation for those who are walking through Navarra

The authorities remind pilgrims of the importance of staying informed about possible weather incidents, fires or road closures that may affect the stages.

Although the Camino de Santiago is one of the safest routes in Europe, exceptional situations such as forest fires, storms or episodes of extreme heat may force itineraries to be modified or extreme precautions to be taken.

The Camino continues normally

Fortunately, emergency services managed to control the progress of the fire and avoid major consequences. Firefighters, Provincial Police, Civil Guard and air resources worked intensely for several hours to stabilize the situation.

Pilgrims who continue to advance towards Santiago can continue their route normally, although the news serves as a reminder that prudence and information are also essential companions of the Camino.

Because on the Camino you don't just have to follow the yellow arrows.

You also have to be attentive to everything that is happening around you.
