Burgos leads the digitalization of the French Camino de Santiago with an innovative project

Burgos, Spain – In an effort to improve the experience of pilgrims and optimize tourism management, Burgos, in collaboration with Pamplona and Logroño, has launched the project «Intelligent Camino de Santiago». This initiative, financed with 817,500 euros from Next Generation funds, seeks the digital transformation of the iconic Camino de Santiago Francés, declared a World Heritage Site.

The project, presented by the city councils of the three cities, will implement a Tourism Intelligence System based on new technologies. This system will allow a detailed analysis of the flow of pilgrims and improve connectivity between participating cities.Burgos leads the digitalization of the Camino de Santiago

Technology at the service of the pilgrim

The project infrastructure includes a network of sensors that will capture data from mobile devices along the Camino. This technology will allow us to know in real time the areas of greatest tourist and commercial interest, as well as the evolution of tourist flows.

"This project will improve the tourist management of the Camino de Santiago and enrich the pilgrim's experience," said Andrea Ballesteros, president of the Burgos Promotion and Development Society and Councilor for Culture.

Benefits for pilgrims and cities

One of the key innovations is obtaining data on the influx of pilgrims without the need for them to download additional applications. "The analysis of this data will allow us to anticipate security and service needs, improving accessibility and efficiency in the three cities," Ballesteros explained.

The “Intelligent Camino de Santiago” project promises to revolutionize the experience of pilgrims, offering a more accessible, efficient and safe Camino. In addition, it will allow participating cities to better manage tourism resources and better understand the needs of visitors.
