Don't Let the Heat Stop You! Essential Tips for the Camino de Santiago in Summer

Summer is here, and with it, the high temperatures that can turn the beautiful Camino de Santiago into an additional challenge. If you are planning your pilgrimage for the warmer months, or are already en route, it is vital that you take precautions. The heat on the Camino is not a game; dehydration and heat stroke are real risks. But don't worry, with good planning and these tips, you will be able to enjoy your adventure without the sun taking its toll on you.

1. Smart Schedules: Win the Battle of the Sun

The golden rule for walking in summer is avoid the middle hours of the day.

  • Get up early to the maximum: Go for a walk at dawn, when the temperature is mildest and the air freshest. Many pilgrims begin their day before the sun rises, even at 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning.
  • Take a long stop at midday: If you cannot finish your stage early, find a place to shelter between 12:00 and 16:00. Take the opportunity to eat, rest in a hostel or a cafeteria, and get back on track when the sun begins to go down.
  • Consider shorter stages: Don't get obsessed with kilometers. It is better to cover less distance and arrive in good condition than to force it and suffer heat stroke.

2. Hydration: Your Best Ally

You drink water, and then you drink more water. Dehydration is enemy number one.

  • Drink constantly: Carry at least 2 liters of water (or even 3-4 liters on long stretches without services) and drink small sips every 15-20 minutes, even if you are not thirsty. When you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
  • Electrolytes: Alternate water with isotonic drinks or mineral salts to replace electrolytes lost through sweat. You can bring sachets to dilute in water.
  • Fountains and bars: Plan your route in advance to know where there are fountains or bars to refill your water bottle.
  • Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine: Although a fresh beer may sound tempting, alcohol and excess caffeine are diuretics and will dehydrate you more quickly.

3. Clothing and Protection: Equip yourself for the Heat

What you wear makes a big difference.

  • Breathable and clear clothing: Opt for technical and light fabrics that move sweat away from your body. Light colors reflect the sun and keep you cooler.
  • Cap or wide-brimmed hat: Essential to protect your head and face from direct sun.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from UV rays.
  • Sunscreen: Apply it generously to all exposed areas and reapply every few hours, especially if you sweat a lot.
  • Multi-purpose scarf (Buff): Wet and placed around the neck or head, it can offer cooling relief.

4. Food: Energy without Heaviness

What you eat also influences how you manage heat.

  • Light meals: Opt for fruits (bananas, apples, oranges), nuts, sandwiches or salads. Avoid heavy and fatty foods that make digestion difficult.
  • Fruits and vegetables with high water content: Melon, watermelon, cucumber, tomato... are excellent for hydration.

5. Listen to Your Body and Ask for Help

Your health comes first. Don't ignore the signs.

  • Symptoms of heat stroke: Headaches, dizziness, nausea, hot, dry skin, confusion, or loss of consciousness. If you or a partner experience these symptoms, immediately seek shade, hydrate, and seek urgent medical help.
  • Blisters: With heat and sweating, blisters can appear more easily. Check your feet constantly and treat them immediately.

The Camino de Santiago in summer can be equally magical, offering unique landscapes and unforgettable sunsets. With these tips, you will be better prepared to enjoy every step and make your pilgrimage a safe and rewarding experience. Buen Camino and protect yourself from the sun
