Galician mayors of the Camino de Santiago visit Guide of Gran Canaria to promote a social project
The mayor of Guía de Gran Canaria, Alfredo Gonçalves Ferreira, along with members of his government, received a delegation of nine mayors and deputy mayors representing the Commonwealth of the French Way of Santiago.
This institutional meeting is framed in the IX edition of the “Path of Values” project, an initiative promoted by the association UP2U, Walking for Mental Health.

«It Depends On You»: A social integration project in two Caminos
The association's core program, called «It depends on you», seeks the integration of young people in situations of exclusion and social vulnerability. The project creates synergies between Galicia and the Canary Islands by making these young people travel both the French Camino de Santiago and the Gran Canarian Camino.
The president of UP2U and judge of the Juvenile Court, Reyes Martel, leads this initiative that is now in its ninth year. She was joined by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare of the Government of the Canary Islands, Francisco Candil, and representatives of the eleven Galician councils that make up the Commonwealth (among them Arzúa, Sarria, Melide, and O Pino).
The delegation's day in Guía culminated with a visit to the local heritage. They had the opportunity to visit different parts of the municipality and, finally, admire the main church of Santa María de Guía and the chapel of the Virgin, being "marveled" with the cultural value of the temple.
