More than a shelter: The El Salvador Hostel in Oviedo closes a record 2025 and is already looking to the future
There is a saying that every pilgrim knows: "Whoever goes to Santiago and not to the Savior, visits the servant and leaves the Lord". And it seems that this last year, thousands of people have taken the rhyme very seriously. He El Salvador Hostel, in Oviedo, has just closed on a historic 2025, consolidating itself not only as a place to let go of your backpack, but as the beating heart of the Primitive Path.
According to the latest data collected by the Association of Friends of the Asturias Camino, the figures do not deceive: interest in the original route, the one started by Alfonso II, is more alive than ever.
A melting pot of nationalities in the heart of Asturias
What is really surprising when reviewing what we experienced this last year is not only the number of people, but also where they come from. Entering the Oviedo hostel has been, throughout 2025, like taking an express trip around the world without leaving the Metropolitan Seminary.
Pilgrims from more than 70 countries have passed through its bunks, with a notable increase in walkers from the United States, South Korea and Germany. What are they looking for? What the French Way sometimes loses along the way: loneliness, authenticity and that point of hardness that only the Asturian mountains know how to give.
The miracle of volunteer hospitaleros
But the success of El Salvador is not explained only by statistics. If this hostel works it is because of the work of its hospitaliers. People who, completely voluntarily, dedicate their holidays to welcoming the pilgrim with a smile, a stamp on their credentials and, sometimes, a cure for a stubborn blister.
They are the ones who transform a cold building into a home. During 2025, the team has worked tirelessly so that no one feels like they are just another number, maintaining that essence of “traditional welcome” that is increasingly difficult to find.
Oviedo: The kilometer zero that never stops growing
The importance of Oviedo as a starting point is strategic. The city has understood that the pilgrim is not a typical tourist; is someone looking for an experience. The improvement in the attention and warmth of the El Salvador Hostel have been key for many to decide to start their adventure here, either along the Primitivo or to connect with the Camino del Norte.
What awaits us in 2026? If the trend continues like this, we are in for a year of many worn boots and many shared stories. Oviedo is now ready to once again be that meeting place where, before starting to walk, we are all equal in front of the imposing Cathedral.
