'Lebannensis'
The new document will be mandatory and will serve as the pilgrim's travel book
The Camino Lebaniego Foundation and the Bishopric of Santander have officially presented the new Camino Lebaniego credential and the new 'Lebanensis' certificate, a document that seeks to reinforce the identity and authenticity of one of the great pilgrimage routes in northern Spain.
The new credential now becomes the official and mandatory model to complete the Camino Lebaniego. As explained by the director of the Camino Lebaniego Foundation, Pilar G. Bahamonde, this document will not only be a piece of paper for collecting stamps, but “the pilgrim's small travel book”, where the stages, experiences and encounters experienced during the route will be reflected.
A design inspired by the historical tradition of Liébana
The new design has been made by Miguel Losada, from the Pizzicato studio, incorporating symbols, colors and visual elements linked to the Lebanese and Jacobean tradition. Furthermore, the official 'Lebannensis' certificate will be inspired by the ancient Blesseds of Liébana and the image of Santiago Apóstol, thus connecting the Lebaniego Way with the great European pilgrimage routes.
The new 'Lebannensis' can be obtained at the end of the pilgrimage at the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana and will have an official signature and an exclusive dry seal that will certify the authenticity of the route taken. The document will be issued in Spanish and Latin.

The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Luis Martínez Abad, presents the new 'Pilgrim's Credential' at a press conference.
The first 'Lebannensis' was delivered to Pilgrims in Cantabria
During the institutional event held in Cantabria, the first symbolic credential and the first 'Lebannensis' of this new stage were delivered to the Pilgrims for Cantabria association in recognition of decades of work in favor of the pilgrimage routes of the region.
The Minister of Culture, Luis Martínez Abad, highlighted that this initiative represents “a gesture of unity, care and shared responsibility” between the institutions involved to continue promoting the Camino Lebaniego as the spiritual, cultural and tourist heritage of Cantabria.
Where to get the new official credential
The new official credentials can be acquired at four points set up for pilgrims:
- Santander Cathedral
- Church of Our Lady of the Angels of San Vicente de la Barquera
- Potes Lebaniegos Studies Center
- Pilgrim Office of the Monastery of Santo Toribio
The old credentials will no longer be officially issued, although they will remain valid for those pilgrims who have already started their route with previous models.
