«Each pilgrim drives the life of our city
The mayor of Jaca and former president of the Association of Municipalities of the Camino de Santiago (AMCS) between 2024 and 2026, Carlos Serrano, has highlighted the enormous importance of the pilgrims' passage for the economic, cultural and social development of the city, one of the great gateways to the Camino de Santiago through Aragon.
During an interview granted to RTV Camino de Santiago, Serrano emphasizes that Jaca is much more than a stage of the Aragonese Way. The city represents a historical enclave where centuries of heritage, hospitality and Jacobean tradition converge, offering pilgrims a unique experience from their arrival through the port of Somport.
The mayor explains that the City Council maintains a firm commitment to promoting the Camino and to the constant improvement of services for pilgrims. Recent advances include the reopening of the municipal shelter, now managed by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Friends of the Camino de Santiago, with the aim of reinforcing the historic Aragonese route and attracting a greater number of walkers.
Serrano also remembers that Jaca played a fundamental role in the modern revival of the Camino de Santiago, by hosting the I International Congress of the Camino in 1987, an event that marked a before and after for the recovery and promotion of the Jacobean routes.
The interview highlights the collaboration between institutions, associations and volunteers to keep the spirit of the Camino alive, consolidating Jaca as an essential reference for thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.
