Mysteries, murders and disappearances that broke the peace of the most famous route in Europe
The Camino de Santiago is synonymous with spirituality, personal improvement, friendship and encounter between cultures. Every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims walk its trails looking for a unique experience that mixes history, nature and reflection. However, behind this image of peace there are also dark episodes that have left a deep mark on Jacobean memory.
Over the last decades, some crimes that occurred at different points along the pilgrimage routes shocked both Spain as well as the international community of walkers. Cases of disappearances, attacks and murders made headlines that contrasted with the welcoming and supportive essence of the Camino de Santiago.

When tragedy appeared among backpacks and pilgrims
Some of the most remembered events had as victims pilgrims who made the Camino alone. The enormous media coverage of these cases sparked a debate about security at certain stages and the need to reinforce surveillance in especially isolated points.
The mix of thousands of kilometers of trails, forests, small villages and rural roads makes the Camino an extraordinary experience, but also a setting where, on exceptional occasions, unexpected situations can occur. Precisely for this reason, the authorities have been increasing protection and assistance devices in recent years.
The Camino remains one of the safest routes in the world
Despite these episodes, statistics show a reality very different from the perception that some specific cases can generate. The vast majority of pilgrims complete their trip without suffering any significant incident. In fact, the security forces highlight every year the low crime rates recorded in comparison with the enormous volume of people who travel the Jacobean route.
Currently, the presence of the Civil Guard, National Police, local police, Civil Protection and pilgrim support associations contributes to reinforcing the feeling of security along the different Caminos. Additionally, technology, mobile apps and the growing network of shelters allow walkers to be more connected and protected than ever.
A story marked by light… and also by some shadows
The so-called “crimes of the Camino” continue to arouse interest because they break with the idealized image of one of the great cultural and religious routes on the planet. They are stories that generate concern precisely because they occur in places associated with hospitality, mutual help and inner search.
However, those who really know the Camino de Santiago agree on one thing: these events represent a minimal exception within an experience that continues to transform the lives of thousands of people every year. The Jacobean route continues to be a symbol of encounter, hope and adventure, where the vast majority of pilgrims find friendship, solidarity and indelible memories much stronger than any dark episode.
