Rain, wind and mud put the Camino to the test in one of the toughest seasons in recent years
Winter has decided not to give a truce and the Camino de Santiago he is noticing it. The chain of storms of recent weeks, with persistent rain, strong gusts of wind and episodes of intense cold, have hit the Jacobean route squarely, causing a notable drop in the number of pilgrims who dare to walk towards Compostela.

Those who venture out on the road these days do so knowing that it will not be an easy road. Stages turned into real mud, flooded paths, rivers overflowing in some sections and entire days walking in the rain have made many choose to postpone their pilgrimage while waiting for kinder times.
Less backpacks, more silence on the roads
Hostels that in other winters maintained a constant trickle of walkers now record nights with very little occupancy. The sound of boots on gravel has been replaced by the sound of wind and rain hitting the windows. Even the most veteran hospitaleros recognize that this winter is being especially hard, both for pilgrims and for those who live on the Camino.
The weather has not only affected the influx, but also the day-to-day logistics. Some sections become complicated or directly impassable during storms, forcing extreme caution and rethinking stages on the fly.
The Camino resists, but warns
Despite the decline in walkers, the Camino demonstrates once again its capacity for resistance. The pilgrims who continue forward do so with a mix of epic spirit and determination, aware that these types of experiences are the ones that leave their mark. However, the message is clear: winter does not forgive and the Camino, in these conditions, requires preparation, head and respect.
Meanwhile, the tourism sector linked to the route trusts that the arrival of spring will return normality and backpacks will fill the trails again. Until then, the Camino is still there, wilder than ever, remembering that it is not always a postcard and sun... sometimes it is also wind, water and pure resistance.
