The Leonese town promotes the Camino de Künig with a welcoming space that reinforces a historic route to Santiago
The Leonese municipality of Santa Marina del Rey has taken an important step to strengthen its ties with the Camino de Santiago with the inauguration of a new municipal hostel for pilgrims. The installation, called «The Künig Pass», was born with the objective of promoting the historic Künig Trail and recover a tradition of hospitality that dates back centuries.
The new hostel has capacity for ten pilgrims and has a community kitchen, hot showers, laundry, garden and bicycle parking, thus offering all the necessary services for those who travel this historic Jacobean variant.

Who was Hermann Künig?
The name of the hostel is not coincidental. Pay tribute to Hermann Künig von Vach, the German monk who wrote one of the first guides for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela.
Published in 1495, his work recommended an alternative route from León that crossed Santa Marina del Rey and the La Cepeda region before heading towards El Bierzo and continuing towards Santiago. That historical description is the basis of the current Künig Trail, a route that in recent years has experienced significant heritage and cultural recovery.
A boost for the Künig Way
The opening of the hostel comes at a particularly important time for this Jacobean route, which recently obtained official recognition as Historic Road to Santiago by the Commission of the Roads to Santiago de Castilla y León.
Local authorities consider that the new space will serve not only to improve care for pilgrims, but also to boost the local economy and contribute to the fight against rural depopulation.
Furthermore, Santa Marina del Rey now adds new infrastructure to its already prominent Jacobean presence, since the municipality has several itineraries related to the Camino de Santiago.
Recover the hospitality of the Camino
One of the most notable aspects of the project is the recovery of the traditional spirit of welcoming pilgrims.
Various associations linked to the Camino have indicated that the inauguration of the hostel represents an important step to restore prominence to a historical route that for centuries was part of the European Jacobean network.
The inauguration also symbolizes the growing interest in rescuing old itineraries to Santiago, expanding the possibilities for pilgrims seeking to discover less traveled paths with strong historical value.
A route with a future
The Camino de Künig continues to gain visibility among walkers and cycle pilgrims interested in exploring historical variants of the Camino de Santiago.
With the launch of "El Paso de Künig", Santa Marina del Rey is positioned as one of the key points of this route, reinforcing a Jacobean tradition that continues to live more than five centuries after Hermann Künig described it for the first time.
For many pilgrims, the opening of new hostels means much more than having a bed to rest in: it means keeping alive the essence of hospitality that has made the Camino de Santiago one of the great travel experiences in the world.
