The beginning of the French Way once again shows its hardness with several pilgrims assisted by exhaustion on a demanding day
The Camino de Santiago once again reminds us that it is not just a spiritual or tourist experience… it is also a real physical challenge.
Three pilgrims have had to be evacuated in the town of Luzaide (Valcarlos), in Navarra, after not being able to continue the march due to exhaustion. The event occurred in one of the first stages of the French Way, right in the section that connects with the entrance from France, known for its demands.
A situation that, although not new, once again puts on the table the importance of preparation and respect for one's own limits.
A stage that tests from the first day
Luzaide is one of the hardest points to start the Camino. Constant climbs, significant slopes and changes in climate make many pilgrims face a reality they did not expect.
In this case, the three pilgrims could not continue due to extreme fatigue, which forced emergency services to be activated for their assistance and transfer.

The Camino without filters
The Camino de Santiago is full of inspiring images, but reality also includes moments like this.
Muscle pain.
Accumulated fatigue.
Lack of preparation.
Everything influences, especially in the early stages, when the body is not yet adapted to continuous effort.
And that is where many pilgrims are forced to stop.
More common than it seems
Although it is not always obvious, this type of intervention is relatively frequent, especially at the beginning of the French Way.
Every year, emergency services treat pilgrims for exhaustion, dehydration or injuries, especially in demanding areas such as the Pyrenees.
What happens in Luzaide is a clear example of this reality.

Listening to the body is also part of the Path
One of the great learnings of the Camino is knowing when to stop.
Not everything is resistance.
It's not all about moving forward at any price.
Sometimes the smartest decision is to stop.
And that is also part of the journey.
A call to preparation
This episode once again reminds us of something essential: the Camino de Santiago requires preparation.
Not only physical, but also mental. Knowing the stages, respecting the times and not underestimating the effort can make the difference between enjoying… or suffering.
The Camino remains authentic
Despite these incidents, the Camino de Santiago remains one of the most transformative experiences that exist.
But precisely because it is real.
Because it's not perfect.
Because it tests.
Because it teaches.
And in places like Luzaide, that lesson starts from day one.
