The Civil Guard has investigated a man as the alleged perpetrator of the careless theft of a backpack from a foreign pilgrim while she was walking the Camino de Santiago as she passed through the El Bierzo area.
Last year, a complaint was filed at the Cacabelos Civil Guard Post in which a pilgrim reported that while she was resting on a bench in that town, a motorcycle appeared with an occupant and that, taking advantage of a mistake, it stole her backpack and fled at high speed. Inside he kept 700 dollars, 200 euros, personal documentation, including his passport and various personal effects.
With the data provided in the complaint, efforts are begun to clarify the incident with the only description of the motorcycle and helmet that the author was wearing at the time of the incident. Finally, after arduous investigations, given that only the description of a motorcycle was available, this Wednesday, February 12, the perpetrator of the theft was identified, located and investigated, and part of the stolen money, the victim's documentation and the backpack with some of the personal effects he was carrying inside were recovered.
Jacobean Security Plan:
The León Command maintains the “Jacobean Security Plan” active throughout the year, which is reinforced at times of the year when the traffic of people on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela increases considerably. Public security will also be prioritized in the most depopulated areas of the province within the framework of the “Plan to Promote the operational response to the Demographic Challenge” of the “Legio Antigua Plan, Security and Protection for the Elderly” and the “Safe Tourism Plan promoted by the Secretary of State for Security”.
OMAP Mobile Citizen Service Office:
These Mobile Offices are vans that are equipped as a mobile citizen service office and adapted for use as OMAP by means of signage and banners that allow their quick location and identification by pilgrims and provide service at different points along the way, which increases the subjective feeling of security and the positive perception of the Corps among national and foreign pilgrims.
Virtual Guardian of the Path:
In addition to the physical presence on the Jacobean Route, the Civil Guard is also present virtually through the “ALERTCOPS application”. Once downloaded to the mobile phone, pilgrims/users can activate the Benemérito Guardian function, which will provide services such as attention from operational service centers, receipt of geolocated security alerts in real time, as well as the possibility of contacting the 062 emergency telephone number, all available in 7 languages.
