Santiago wants to save lives on the Camino: they propose a network of defibrillators accessible to everyone
A key step to protect pilgrims and neighbors in an increasingly visited city
The Camino de Santiago is not only spiritual, it is also physical. And in a city that welcomes hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year, any minute counts when an emergency occurs.
For this reason, the proposal presented by Marta Álvarez in Santiago puts a clear idea on the table: create a network of cardioprotected spaces and a public map of defibrillators that allows rapid action in the event of cardiac arrest.
An initiative that, beyond politics, directly aims to save lives.
The problem: defibrillators… but without visibility
Currently, Santiago has numerous defibrillators spread throughout the city: sports facilities, educational centers, public buildings or private spaces.
The problem is not that they do not exist.
The problem is that many times you don't know where they are.
The lack of a unified and visible system makes it difficult to use in critical situations, where every second can mean the difference between life and death.

The proposal: a clear map and a coordinated network
The initiative proposes something simple but very necessary:
- Create a public defibrillator map accessible to anyone
- Coordinate all existing devices
- Install new ones at strategic points
- Improve first aid training
The objective is clear: that anyone, whether neighbor or pilgrim, can quickly locate a defibrillator in case of emergency.
The Camino also needs protection
But the constant growth of pilgrims makes it necessary to go one step further.
Accumulated fatigue, physical effort and long stages mean that the risk exists. And in those moments, speed of response is essential.
More than a health measure
This proposal is not just a technical improvement. It is a way of understanding the city and the Camino.
A place prepared to care.
To respond.
To protect.
Because in a city like Santiago, where pilgrims from all over the world arrive every day, security is also part of the experience.
A safer path for everyone
The creation of this network could mark a before and after. Not only for the neighbors, but also for the thousands of pilgrims who walk its streets every year.
Because the Camino is not only about reaching the goal...
It is also doing it safely.
