A German pilgrim traveling through the Camino de Santiago died this Saturday after falling down a slope of approximately 30 meters in the Lugo municipality of Mondoñedo, in a section of the North Road. (elprogreso.es)
The victim, a woman of around 30 years old and of German nationality, was making the pilgrimage accompanied by another person when the tragic accident occurred in the parish of Maariz. For reasons that are still being investigated, the pilgrim fell through an area that was difficult to access, forcing numerous emergency services to be mobilized.
Troops from the 061, the Civil Guard, the Barreiros Firefighters and other rescue teams, although in the end they could only certify the death of the young woman.
Psychological care for the companion
The pilgrim's companion received psychological assistance after the event. 112 activated the specific protocol for this type of situation, since the strong emotional impact made the intervention of specialized professionals necessary.
Furthermore, during the emergency call it was necessary to use a translation service, since the pilgrims communicated in English.
Open investigation into the causes of the accident
The exact circumstances that caused the fall remain under investigation. People familiar with the area have expressed their surprise, since the section where the accident occurred is not usually considered especially dangerous.
The day was marked by high temperatures in Galicia, although at the moment there is no official explanation for the causes of the event.
