A night of earthquakes surprises pilgrims on the Camino

Up to 16 earthquakes shake the Sarria area in the middle of the morning

The usual tranquility of the Camino de Santiago was broken during the early hours of the morning in the province of Lugo. A series of earthquakes surprised residents and pilgrims in one of the busiest areas of the French Way, leaving an unusual night in the area of Sarria.

Between three and eight in the morning, up to 16 seismic movements were recorded in different parts of the province, with epicenters located in areas such as Triacastela, Baralla and Becerreá. The most intense reached 3.9 degrees on the Richter scale, a magnitude sufficient to be perceived in several municipalities in the area.

A night of earthquakes surprises pilgrims on the Camino

Those who did notice it are clear: it was not just any night. Some neighbors talk about vibrations in their homes, sudden noises and even the sensation that the bed was moving. Others, however, perceived absolutely nothing.

And here comes the Camino.

Many pilgrims who were sleeping in shelters in the area did not realize what happened. The fatigue accumulated after days of walking meant that, in many cases, the night passed completely normally for them. While the earth shook, they continued sleeping.

What happened may seem exceptional, but it has a clear geographical explanation. The Sarria area and its surroundings are part of one of the main seismic focuses in the northwest of the peninsula, known as the Lugo seismic triangle. At this point, low-intensity movements are not strange, although so many do not always coincide in the same period of time.

Despite the striking nature of the episode, no material damage or personal incidents were recorded. The emergency services did not have to intervene, and the situation remained normal, beyond the initial scare of those who did feel the tremors.

The context, however, makes the news have a greater impact. Sarria is not just any place on the Camino. It is the most popular starting point for thousands of pilgrims each year, the place from which many begin the last 100 kilometers to Santiago. Everything that happens here has a direct impact on the perception of the Camino.

And yet, this episode does not change the general reality.

OIP

The Camino de Santiago continues to be a safe, stable and well-organized route. What happened does not respond to a security problem, but to a natural phenomenon that, although rare in its accumulated intensity, is part of the behavior of the terrain.

What it does leave is a curious and unusual image: that of an ancient route in which, for a few hours, the earth also moves.

Because the Camino, beyond the spiritual or the physical, has always been unpredictable. Each pilgrim experiences something different. Some find answers, others silence, others fatigue.

And some, like on this occasion, come across something they did not expect: a night in which the Camino is not only walked... it also trembles.
