A simple act of hospitality in La Rioja shows the true spirit of the Camino de Santiago
A group of primary school students in Logroño, in Spain’s La Rioja region, has reminded pilgrims from around the world what the Camino de Santiago is really about: kindness, human connection and hospitality.
Pupils from the sixth grade at CEIP Varia stepped outside their classroom to welcome walkers arriving in the city along the French Way. Accompanied by their English teacher and tutor, the children used the opportunity to practice their language skills in real-life conversations with pilgrims from different countries.
But this was much more than an English lesson.
The students greeted the pilgrims with one of the simplest yet most meaningful gestures of Spanish hospitality: fresh bread and olive oil, offering visitors a small taste of local tradition after many kilometres on foot.
For many of the pilgrims, the unexpected welcome became one of those unforgettable Camino moments that are impossible to plan. Beyond the monuments, landscapes and historic routes, it is often these spontaneous encounters that leave the deepest impression.
The activity also allowed the children to learn about different cultures and hear personal stories from people undertaking one of the world’s most famous pilgrimages. In doing so, the young students became true ambassadors for their city, demonstrating curiosity, generosity and openness towards those passing through Logroño on their journey to Santiago de Compostela.
Logroño has long been one of the most important stops on the Camino Francés, welcoming thousands of pilgrims every year. The city is known not only for its historic centre and gastronomy but also for the warmth with which locals embrace the spirit of the Camino.
As the Camino continues to attract people from all corners of the globe in 2026, stories like this serve as a powerful reminder that pilgrimage is not only about reaching a destination. It is also about the people encountered along the way.
Sometimes, all it takes is a smile, a few words in another language and a piece of bread dipped in olive oil to make a stranger feel at home.
