Young pilgrims raise faith in Santiago de Compostela

Young pilgrims raise faith in Santiago de Compostela

A group of young people from Effetá Castellón transforms the Caminho de Santiago into an experience of faith, friendship and missão. The pilgrimage to Compostela reminds us of a dimension that continues to be alive among thousands of walkers: wandering the Caminho can also be an interior journey.

The Caminho de Santiago continues to attract young people who seek much more than to complete kilometers or gain à Praça do Obradoiro. This time, there are young people linked to Effetá Castellón that we assume the pilgrimage as an experience of faith, brotherhood and encounter.

As an initiative, a youth community was born that regularly meets in the Santíssima Trindade Parish of Castellón. Effetá has been present in the Diocese of Segorbe-Castellón since 2023 and organizes meetings and retreats aimed mainly at young people between 18 and 30 years old.

A path lived in a community

For these pilgrims, Santiago does not represent just a geographical destination. The journey itself offers time to talk, share difficulties, help the journey next to you and discover a different way of living in faith.

It is precisely that combination between physical effort and inner experience that, over two centuries, transformed the Camino de Santiago into one of the great Christian pilgrimages of Europe.

The Effetá walk recovers that spiritual dimension at a time when many pilgrims come to the Caminho for very different reasons: religious, cultural, sports or simply to want to take a break in everyday life.

Young people who find a different space on the road

Effetá is defined as an apostolate of young people for young people, inspired by the experience of the Emmaus Retreats. Our encounters combine prayer, training and coexistence, while the retreats seek to provide a personal experience of encounter with God.

The movement is coming to grow in Castellón. In February 2026, for example, the VI Retreat of Effetá gathered 168 young people, between participants and servers, not Mater Dei Seminar.

Agora, or silent cemetery.

It provides a meeting room for the roads that lead to Compostela.

Santiago, a destination that continues to unite generations

The presence of these young people also shows how the Jacobean pilgrimage continues to be able to dialogue with new generations.

Boots, backpacks, fatigue and miles coexist with conversations and moments of silence. And, little by little, Santiago stops being just a point on a map and transforms into a set goal.

Regardless of the motivations of each pilgrim, there is something that practically everyone ends up discovering: It does not end exactly or even the same path as it begins.

For the young people of Effetá Castellón, this pilgrimage seeks precisely this: to walk together, strengthen the ties of friendship and bring to Santiago an experience built around faith and fraternity.

When we finally appear the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago, it will end on a walk.

The experience, probably, will continue long after the last kilometer.
