There is a decision that completely changes a stage of the Camino: leave the hostel with eight kilos on your back or do it with a small backpack of water, documentation and shelter. He Camino backpack transport It is an increasingly used aid, but it does not mean the same for all pilgrims. For some it is the way to continue after an injury; for others, a tool to enjoy the landscape without turning each climb into a battle.
The question should not be whether carrying the backpack makes the Camino “less authentic”. The useful question is another: does it help you walk with security, respect and presence? The Camino is not measured by the weight you carry, but by how you travel through its towns, how you take care of your body and how you share the route with others. And each pilgrim arrives with a different story!
What is carrying backpacks on the Camino?
This service collects your backpack or suitcase in the morning at the accommodation and delivers it, usually before noon or early in the afternoon, to the point where you will sleep that night. It works on a large part of the Jacobean routes, especially on the sections with the largest network of accommodations on the French, Portuguese, Northern, Primitive, English and Vía de la Plata Ways.
Not all services work the same. Some cover specific stages and others have a broad presence in several autonomous communities. The collection times, weight limits, cost per package and conditions for small villages or accommodations far from the main route also change. That is why it is advisable to inform yourself before reserving your bed: assuming that a company arrives anywhere can complicate an afternoon that should be restful.
The backpack travels, but you are still responsible for planning your stage. You must know where you are going to sleep, correctly indicate the name of the accommodation and bring the essentials with you. It seems obvious, but every season there are pilgrims who deliver medication, documentation or car keys inside their main backpack. That can become a serious problem.
When is it worth hiring
There are times when transportation is not a whim, but a sensible decision. Tendonitis, a poorly healed blister, lower back pain, recovery after an operation or a particularly demanding stage justify lightening weight. It can also be a good option for seniors, families walking with children, or pilgrims carrying additional equipment for medical needs.
On tough routes, the margin between a memorable day and physical overload can be small. Let's think about long climbs, technical descents, rainy days or successions of long stages without a real rest. Walking lightly does not eliminate effort, but it allows you to pay more attention to where you step and reduces accumulated fatigue.
There is also a practical reason: not everyone can prepare a three-week Camino with the same material. Those who travel from afar, combine the pilgrimage with other trips or need to carry clothing for changing climates may find themselves with a backpack that is above the recommended weight. In those cases, using the service for a few days can prevent the experience from suffering from the beginning.
Now, it is not necessary to hire it automatically for the entire route. Many pilgrims use it only in a mountain stage, after a complicated day or during the last days, when fatigue is already heavier than the backpack. The Camino allows flexible decisions. Listen to your body before the body has to force you to stop.
Carrying Camino backpacks: what to check before
Price matters, of course, but it shouldn't be the only criterion. A reliable service is recognized by the clarity of its conditions, by accessible attention if an incident arises and by real knowledge of the locations where it operates. If you are going to book, check these aspects before leaving your backpack at reception:
- The maximum weight allowed and the supplement, if any, for excess load.
- The delivery and collection deadline, especially on Sundays, holidays or busy periods.
- The exact coverage between your departure accommodation and your arrival accommodation.
- The package identification system: label, form, digital reservation or code.
- What happens if you change accommodation, cancel a night or the backpack does not arrive at the scheduled time.
Read the accommodation instructions carefully. In some places you will have to leave the backpack in a designated space; In others, hand it directly to the driver or take it to a collection point. Don't improvise. An incomplete tag, an incorrectly indicated room or an abbreviated name can send your luggage to another establishment with a similar name.
It is a good idea to carry a sturdy label with your name, telephone number, date, destination and accommodation name. If you make multiple consecutive reservations, confirm that the service has received all the correct data. In high season, when the towns fill up and last minute changes are frequent, this simple check avoids more than one shock.
What should never travel in your backpack
Even if the package arrives without problems, there are objects that should always go with you. The small day backpack should include documentation, health card, money or cards, phone, charger, medication, glasses, sun protection, water and some food. Add a waterproof or warm layer if the weather is unstable.
The pilgrim's credential deserves a separate mention. Take it with you. It is your route document and the one you will stamp during the day. Keeping it in a carried backpack may seem convenient, but it leaves you without the possibility of requesting stamps in churches, hostels, bars or places that are part of your own memory of the Camino.
It is also not advisable to leave valuables, expensive cameras or delicate electronic devices without checking the transport conditions. Responsible companies take care of your packages, but a vehicle, loading and unloading, or unexpected rain never offer the same control as carrying your important belongings with you.
Walking lightly is not ignoring the Camino
There is a recurring debate among pilgrims: whether using luggage transport contradicts the spirit of the route. The honest answer is that it depends on attitude. The Camino has historically known very diverse forms of pilgrimage: on foot, on horseback, by bicycle, with family support, with health problems, for faith, for grief, for cultural curiosity or for the need for silence.
What you should avoid is turning the service into an excuse to carry a disproportionate suitcase or to lose autonomy. If you can reduce weight, do it. A thoughtfully prepared backpack is still useful even if you don't carry it every day: it allows you to change plans, respond to an incident, and better understand what you really need.
Hospitality also comes into play. Respect accommodation schedules, do not block hallways with luggage and let us know if you are going to arrive late. If your backpack is transported to a donation shelter, remember that this space lives from collaboration and respect between pilgrims, not from the demands of a hotel. Comfort should not erase gratitude.
Alternatives and decisions according to your route
On short, flat stages, it may be enough to check the contents of the backpack and dispense with transportation. We often carry duplicates, extra clothes or accessories that we haven't worn in a week. Losing one or two kilos can greatly change the feeling when you walk.
On the Camino del Norte or Primitivo, where the terrain can be more demanding and some services are less constant outside of the main towns, planning ahead is especially important. In Portuguese, French or English there are usually more options in the usual sections, but high demand also forces us not to leave everything until the night before. On less traveled routes, such as certain sectors of the Vía de la Plata or the Camino de Invierno, availability can vary greatly from one town to another.
If you travel with a pet, expressly check if the service accepts transporting accessories such as food, feeders or folding carriers. And if you are a cyclist, don't confuse backpack transfer with a bicycle service: they are different needs and must be organized separately.
On the Camino de Santiago RTV we see it often: the best planning is not the most rigid, but rather the one that leaves room for change. Today you may need to carry everything and tomorrow send the backpack ahead. An encounter, a minor injury or a storm may cause you to modify the stage. Having clear information allows you to decide without drama.
When you leave your backpack at the door of the accommodation, look once again at what you have with you. Water, credentials, cell phone, some shelter and desire to walk. The rest can travel a few kilometers by road; Your Path, the one that no one can carry for you, continues to advance step by step.
