Maritxu's story is not only incredible… it is a reminder of why the Camino changes lives
On a Camino de Santiago where thousands of stories are born every day, there are some that stay forever.
And then there is the Maritxu.
To his 85 years, this Basque pilgrim walks towards Santiago again… in what is now her Road number 56.
It's not just any record.
It's a whole life walking.
A promise that became destiny
It all started in 2007, in one of the hardest moments of his life.
After overcoming a very serious pneumonia, he made a promise: if he survived, he would do the Camino de Santiago.
And he complied.
Not once.
Not two.
More than fifty.
Today, almost two decades later, he continues walking with the same enthusiasm as the first day, demonstrating that the strength of the Camino is ageless.
“I am happy doing the Camino”
During his time at Vigo, where she was received with affection by authorities and pilgrims, she left a phrase that sums up everything:
“I am happy doing the Camino.”
And not much more needs to be said.
Because everything is in those words.

Much more than a record
Maritxu does not walk by figures.
Walk for life.
He has traveled the Camino de la Costa several times, has reached Muxía on numerous occasions and has turned each route into a way of understanding the world.
But what is really impressive are not the numbers.
It's your energy.
His smile.
His way of looking at the Camino.
A symbol of the modern Camino
In a year where the Camino de la Costa breaks records and surpasses historical numbers of pilgrims, his figure stands out even more.
Because in the midst of statistics, figures and growth...
she appears.
Remembering the essential.
The true lesson of the Camino
His story makes one thing clear:
The Camino is not a question of age.
It's not a matter of kilometers.
It's a matter of heart.
Because there are those who do the Camino once...
and there are those who make it their life.
When the Path is you
Maritxu is no longer just a pilgrim.
It is part of the Camino.
One of those people who define it without realizing it, who inspire without looking for it and who leave their mark in every step.
And perhaps, that is the key.
The Camino does not end in Santiago.
It continues in people like her.
