A disoriented pilgrim activates the alarms on one of the hardest routes... and his phone becomes the only way out
The Camino de Santiago has experienced one of those moments that no one wants to experience... but that remind us how vulnerable a pilgrim can be.
A 72-year-old man, completely disoriented and not knowing where he was, got lost in a rural area of Galicia while doing one of the most demanding routes of the Camino.
The night was approaching.
And the situation was beginning to be critical.
Alone, tired... and aimless
The pilgrim had fallen behind his companions during the stage. In an attempt to get back on the right path, he ended up detouring and entering an unknown area.
Without clear references.
No guidance.
And with time against him.
As the afternoon fell, fatigue and uncertainty increased. It was then that he decided to do the only thing that could save him: call the emergency services.
The detail that made the difference
The problem was that he didn't know where he was.
And there began an almost incredible scene.
The agents asked him to send his location... but the pilgrim did not even have the necessary application on your mobile. Even so, guided step by step by phone, he managed to download it and share his position in the midst of nervousness.
In a matter of minutes, the signal made it possible to locate him.

Rescue in time… by minutes
Emergency teams quickly moved to the indicated area, near a mountain that was difficult to access.
The pilgrim was found safe and sound, although visibly exhausted, thus avoiding spending the night in the mountains, a situation that could have had serious consequences.
Shortly after, he was able to meet his teammates again.
And the next day… the Camino continued.
A route as beautiful as it is dangerous
The section in which everything happened is not just any. This is one of the toughest variants of the Camino, with sparsely inhabited areas, irregular signage and long stretches of pure nature.
A spectacular place… but demanding.
Where a small mistake can become a serious problem.
The lesson that this story leaves
This episode leaves a clear warning for all pilgrims:
The Camino is not dangerous... but it is not a game either.
Bring your cell phone charged.
Do not separate from the group.
And know the route well.
It can make a difference.
Between adventure and risk
The Camino de Santiago remains a unique experience, but stories like this remind us that it also demands respect.
Because sometimes, the difference between an anecdote...
and a tragedy...
It can fit in a cell phone battery.
