Alert for Forest Fires on the Camino de Santiago: Pilgrim Safety, a Priority

SPAIN – The Camino de Santiago faces an unexpected challenge this summer: the serious wave of forest fires that is devastating Spain, with active outbreaks that exceed the 110,000 hectares devastated and have caused at least three fatalities. In the face of this crisis, the safety of pilgrims has become a priority, urging caution and constant information.

State of the Situation and Conditions on the Jacobean Routes

As of August 15, 2025, the most relevant fires are concentrated in Ourense, León, Zamora and Cáceres, which has led to the suspension of train service AVE Madrid-Galicia and the closure of main roads such as A-52, N-525, A-66 y N-630.

Although the official closure of any section of the Camino de Santiago has not been confirmed, the proximity of the flames and the logistical difficulties directly affect several routes:

  • Sanabrés Way (Vía de la Plata): The section between A Gudiña and Ourense is under special surveillance due to nearby outbreaks and cuts on the A-52 and N-525, which may require adjustments to the stages.
  • Vía de la Plata (Extremadura-Castilla y León): Specific conditions are recorded on the A-66 and N-630 due to the fires in Cáceres.
  • French Way (León): The fire in nearby mountainous areas, such as Cabeza de Yegua in the Peñalba region of Santiago, keeps the area on high alert. The main route is not closed, but maximum vigilance is recommended.

Crucial Recommendations for Pilgrim Safety

The Jacobean authorities and guides insist on the importance of prevention and information to avoid risks:

  1. Immediate Notice: If there is any sign of smoke or fire, immediately call the 112.
  2. Act Safely: Move away from the fire to clear areas without vegetation.
  3. Respiratory Protection: Cover your mouth and nose with a damp cloth to protect yourself from smoke.
  4. Stay Informed: Before starting each stage, consult official channels such as the daily reports of Medio Rural, the DGT and Renfe.

The impact of the fires is a serious reality that affects the safety and logistics of the pilgrimage. Prudence, planning and attention to official communications are essential so that the experience on the Camino continues to be safe.
