How to get to Sarria and take the first step on the Camino

The Galician town from which thousands of pilgrims begin their journey to Compostela every year

There are places that need no introduction. Sarria is one of them. Year after year, this municipality of Lugo consolidates itself as the most popular starting point of the Camino de Santiago, a place where nerves, excitement and newly adjusted backpacks intersect. It is no coincidence: from Sarria the last 100 kilometers of the French Way, the minimum distance required to obtain the Compostela, which makes it the preferred choice of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.

But reducing Sarria to a simple figure would be unfair. This Galician town is much more than a practical starting point. It is a place full of history, hospitality and pilgrim atmosphere, where the Camino is felt from the first step.

An accessible start for pilgrims from all over the world

One of the great keys to Sarria's success is its excellent accessibility. Getting here is easy both from Galicia and from other parts of Spain. Connections by train, road and bus make it easy for national and international pilgrims to arrive in Sarria without complications, even with little time available.

This factor has turned the municipality into a true “gateway” to the Camino, especially for those who are starting out for the first time or have a week to live the Jacobean experience.

Pilgrim atmosphere from the first step

As soon as you arrive, Sarria breathes the Camino. Hostels, guest houses, restaurants and specialized stores coexist with neighbors accustomed to guiding, helping and encouraging those who begin the adventure. Here the pilgrim does not feel strange: he feels part of something.

The historic center, the medieval bridges and the first rural paths that leave the town offer a perfect transition between urban life and the greener, quieter Camino that awaits in the following stages.

Much more than an exit point

Sarria is also a place to stop, get to know and enjoy. Its heritage, its gastronomy and its natural environment turn the stay before the start of the Camino into an experience in itself. Many pilgrims arrive a day early to soak up the atmosphere, stamp their credentials and experience that mix of nerves and excitement that is only felt before starting to walk.

A success that poses challenges

The enormous attractiveness of Sarria also brings with it challenges: overcrowding at certain times, high demand for accommodation and the constant need to manage the flow of pilgrims without losing the essence of the Camino. Even so, Sarria continues to know how to welcome, adapt and reinvent itself.

Because some beginnings are forgotten...
but the first step from Sarria, almost never.
