From Norway to Santiago on Pedals for a Noble Cause: The Epic Journey of José Torres!

Santiago de Compostela, Spain – The Camino de Santiago has witnessed countless stories of faith, improvement and altruism. One of the most recent and amazing is that of Jose Torres, a 48-year-old from Alicante who has pedaled 5,300 kilometers from Norway to the doors of Santiago de Compostela. Its mission: raise funds and give visibility to Diagnostic Objective, a vital association that provides support to people suffering from diseases without a clear diagnosis.

A Path of Continents and Commitment from Norway

José, a Camino enthusiast who already walked it from Rome last year, began this titanic adventure on June 8. "I have passed through Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, France and now finally Spain," says the pilgrim, who is currently in Palas de Rei, after having left Triacastela behind. His journey is not only a physical feat, but a cry of hope for those seeking medical answers. “Everything I can raise on this trip will help get us closer to getting answers,” he explains.

Torres' journey has been possible thanks to the sponsorship of eleven companies and the generosity of multitude of people who have 'sponsored stages' with a contribution of 40 euros, receiving in exchange a certificate of collaboration.

Extreme Challenges and the Strength of the Mind from Norway

This Journey from the Arctic Circle has tested José's limits. "More than forty days of pedaling eight hours a day take their toll, it has been very hard," he confesses. The first stages in Norway, Sweden and Denmark were marked by "atrocious" cold, with snow, rain and even hail, forcing him to sleep in tents in the absence of shelters.

His daily routine was exhausting: getting up at dawn, having breakfast and pedaling from six in the morning. Stops were few and far between, sometimes just to charge the phone or have a coffee. The nights, often in the middle of the forest surrounded by wild animals, involved cooking with a stove and basic hygiene.

A Heat Stroke That Almost Frustrated the Deed

But the real test came in Paris. "I got heat stroke from pedaling at 40 degrees and spent two days in the hospital," he says. At that moment, the idea of abandoning the adventure was real. "I have lived in all seasons of the year in forty days, but the worst was in France, when I thought I would not finish because I felt physically incapable," he adds.

However, Joseph's determination overcame the physical and mental suffering. “I wanted to help the association as I had proposed… I found strength,” he says, highlighting that on such a long Camino, mental strength is even more crucial than physical strength.

A Personal Sacrifice for the Greater Good

José Torres does not have family members directly affected by undiagnosed diseases, but he knows first-hand the valuable work of Objective Diagnosis. To embark on this mission, he has had to invest his vacations, days of seniority and ask favors from colleagues who have supported him in his work.

"Now I have very little left, I see the goal very close," he says proudly, anticipating the meeting in Santiago with the president of the association, who will accompany him back home. “I left more than forty days ago and now I just want to be home with my loved ones,” concludes this hero of the Camino, about to hug the apostle and celebrate his incredible feat of solidarity.
