Discover History on the Road: 19 Temples of León Open Their Doors this Summer
Leon, Spain – Pilgrims and tourists who tour the French Way of Saint James This summer you will have a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history and artistic heritage of the province of León. Until the September 7, 2025, a total of 19 notable temples of the Diocese of León, most strategically located along the Jacobean route, will extend their opening hours.
This initiative is part of the Summer Monument Opening Program 2025, the result of a consolidated agreement between the Diocese of León and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Government of Castilla y León. For more than two decades, this collaboration has allowed these temples to remain accessible to the public of Tuesday to Sunday, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m..
The goal is to not only enrich the visitor experience, but also promote the development of the Leonese rural environment through cultural tourism.

A Journey through Faith and Art
The program includes fifteen temples directly linked to the French Camino de Santiago, true architectural and spiritual jewels that have accompanied pilgrims for centuries. Among them stand out the Parish Church of San Miguel in Grajal de Campos and the hermitage of Santiago in Trobajo del Camino, essential milestones for those who travel this ancient path.
In addition, the initiative expands beyond the French Way to include other points of religious and cultural interest in the province:
- He Sanctuary of Good Success in Huergas de Gordon, essential stop in the well-known Path of the Savior.
- The majestic Collegiate Church of Santa María de Arbas, located on the border with the Principality of Asturias.
- The imposing Lois Parish Church, affectionately nicknamed the “Mountain Cathedral.”
- The Parish Church of San Martín de Valdetuéjar, another important exponent of Leonese heritage.
These thematic programs, such as the "Camino de Santiago Francés" or "Plateresco Altarpieces in the East of León", offer a window into the diversity and cultural richness of the province, inviting you to explore its most emblematic corners while promoting sustainable tourism in the rural area.
