MOLINASECA, LEÓN – The Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard of León, in a joint operation with environmental agents of the Junta de Castilla y León, has managed to identify and arrest a 75-year-old man as the alleged perpetrator of the serious forest fire that broke out last Sunday, August 24, in the town of Molinaseca.
The incident, which affected a point of great importance in the Camino de Santiago As it passed through the Leonese region of El Bierzo, it was caused by serious negligence. According to investigations, the detainee lit a bonfire to cook with a rudimentary barbecue, which caused the fire to spread uncontrollably to the forest land due to the high temperatures and dry conditions of the vegetation.

The quick action of the Civil Guard and environmental agents, who began investigations immediately, has made it possible to clarify the origin of the fire and arrest the alleged perpetrator. The affected area, in addition to its environmental value, is a constant transit point for thousands of pilgrims, which increased concern about the risk that the situation could generate.
The proceedings have been made available to the judicial authority to determine the responsibility of the detainee. This event highlights the importance of taking extreme precautions in natural environments, especially in times of fire risk, to avoid tragedies.
