The Primitive Way: The original jewel, for 2026

Pilgrim walking on the clouds on the Camino Primitivo

The oldest, most authentic and quietest Camino once again seduces pilgrims

At a time when many walkers seek to escape the crowds and rediscover the true meaning of the Camino de Santiago, the Primitive Way of Santiago It is strongly emerging as one of the best options for 2026. This historic route, considered the oldest of all, preserves the essence of the pilgrimage intact: effort, nature, silence and a deep connection with the territory.

The Primitive Way starts from Oviedo and travels more than 320 kilometers through the interior of Asturias and Galicia until it reaches Santiago de Compostela. Its route runs between mountains, green valleys, closed forests and small villages where time seems to have stopped. Here there is no rush or crowds: there are firm steps, slow conversations and a landscape that accompanies the pilgrim at each stage.

A demanding path that rewards the soul

It is not the easiest Camino, and that is precisely why it is so special. Its unevenness, especially in Asturias, turns each day into a physical challenge, but also a deeply rewarding experience. The Primitivo is not walked in a group, it is walked within. The absence of overcrowding allows you to experience the Camino in an intimate, almost personal way, recovering that medieval spirit that gave rise to the Jacobean route.

The hostels maintain a calm and welcoming atmosphere, where tables, stories and silences are still shared. Many pilgrims highlight the sincere hospitality of the towns, where the walker continues to be received with curiosity and closeness, far from accelerated tourism.

Gastronomy, heritage and landscape in its purest form

The Primitive Way is also a route for the senses. Asturian and Galician gastronomy accompanies each stage with high-quality local products: artisan cheeses, natural cider, stew dishes and traditional cuisine that comforts after daily effort. Added to this is a discreet but valuable heritage, with old churches, pilgrim hospitals and historical vestiges that remind us that it all began here.

2026, the ideal time to discover it

With constant improvements in signage, maintenance and services, 2026 is shaping up to be a perfect year to discover the Camino Primitivo before it loses its reserved nature. It is a clear invitation for those seeking authenticity, sustainability and a real experience, without artifice or crowds.

The Primitive Way does not promise comfort, it promises truth. And that truth continues to await those who dare to walk it.
