Alfonso Barcia, a pillar of the Camino de Santiago and tireless defender of Jacobean crafts, dies
With deep regret and great respect, the community of the Camino de Santiago and the world of traditional crafts receive the news of the death of Alfonso Barcia, former president of the Union of Artisans of the Order of the Camino de Santiago and recognized Knight of the Order.
Barcia was much more than a leader. It was a figure that represented the passion for tradition, affection for those who walk and faith in the conservation of cultural roots that unite each pilgrim with the history of the Jacobean Route.

For decades, he put his heart into every project, every meeting and every fair he participated in. His voice was known and respected, and his commitment to the artisans who work with their hands and soul to keep traditions alive was tireless.
For many, Alfonso was not only a president, but a brother on the way, someone who understood that traditional crafts—ceramics, leather, forging, wood—are an essential part of the spirit of the Camino. Through their work, these trades not only survived, but shone with their own light to those who sought in each product a story, a meaning, a connection with the land and its people.
His legacy is not measured in titles, but in inspired people, promoted projects and shared smiles. The artisans who had the privilege of working alongside him remember him as a firm, generous and close guide, always willing to lend a hand, listen to an idea or celebrate an achievement, no matter how small.
Today, those of us who make the Camino, walk it in person or spiritually, feel one more gap in this eternal path of encounters, learning and shared memories. Alfonso's mark remains in each fair, in each artisanal piece that tells a story and in each step that unites tradition and modernity.
May his memory inspire those who continue working to keep the essence of the Camino de Santiago alive.
