“The spirituality of the Camino de Santiago attracts Japanese”

Takahiro Nakamae, who visited Spain more than 30 years ago and is currently the Japanese ambassador to our country, has witnessed the growing interest of Spaniards in Japanese culture and spirituality. With a significant increase in Spaniards traveling to Japan and vice versa, Ambassador Nakamae shares his perspectives on cultural differences, tourism, trade relations and the thermal potential of Ourense.

Cultural differences and the vision of Spain

After visiting almost all the autonomous communities of Spain, Ambassador Nakamae highlights the diversity of landscapes, culture and history of each place. However, it also highlights a common element: spirituality and religion. Despite this, he is surprised how cultural differences are noticeable even over short distances, such as 100 or 150 kilometers.5081d9f7 8418 40a5 a6b7 cfb1f80afb3d 16 9 aspect ratio 1200w 0

Historically, Japan has associated Spain with the Andalusian vision of the country, but the ambassador recognizes that there is much room for growth in cultural exchange. The growing interest of the Japanese in Galician culture stands out, especially in the Camino de Santiago, which attracts those seeking a spiritual and pilgrimage experience.

The Camino de Santiago and the Kumano Kodo Trail

The brotherhood relationship between the Camino de Santiago and the Kumano Kodo Trail, as well as other pilgrimage routes in Japan, has driven a greater flow of visitors between both countries. Ambassador Nakamae sees this cultural exchange as an opportunity to continue growing and strengthening ties between Japan and Spain.

Commercial relationships and sectors with growth potential

Bilateral trade between Japan and Spain amounts to about 4,000 million euros, with pork, and especially Iberian pork, being the main Spanish export product. However, Ambassador Nakamae highlights the increase in Spanish investment in Japan and vice versa, especially in areas such as renewable energy and hydrogen, where both countries are interested in collaborating.

The thermal potential of Ourense and the Japanese experience

With an extensive thermal tradition, Japan has around 28,000 thermal water sources operating throughout the country. Ambassador Nakamae explains that it is not just about the bathrooms, but a tourist resource that drives hotel development and the local economy. Traditionally, people use hot springs for several days, creating a significant economic impact.

In contrast, Ambassador Nakamae recognizes the thermal potential of Ourense, but points out that it is still far from achieving development that would allow for the creation of the wealth that is assumed from this resource. The Japanese experience in this area could serve as an example to promote the use of thermal waters in Ourense and generate a positive impact on the local economy.
