The temporary closure of the Logroño municipal pilgrim hostel has generated strong controversy at the height of the Camino de Santiago. The City Council's decision, motivated by improvement works inside the building, coincides with one of the moments of greatest influx of walkers, which has provoked criticism from the Jacobean environment.

The work began in mid-April and will force the shelter to be closed for approximately a month, with a planned reopening in mid-May.

Necessary works… but at the worst moment

The actions include maintenance tasks such as painting, repairing doors and windows or conditioning common areas. The objective, according to the City Council, is to improve the stay of pilgrims at this key point of the French Way.

However, the coincidence with the high season has ignited the debate.

Associations linked to the Camino consider that this type of intervention should be carried out in winter, when the flow of pilgrims is much lower.

Criticism for lack of planning

The Riojan Association of Friends of the Camino has been especially critical of the decision. The group denounces that the closure is “poorly planned” and that it has been carried out at a time when the service is more necessary than ever.

As they explain, on these dates the hostel can receive between 50 and 60 pilgrims daily, which reflects the importance of this space within the Jacobean network.

In addition, they denounce the lack of foresight and communication, since many pilgrims arrive without knowing that the hostel is closed.

Direct impact on pilgrims

The municipal hostel is the main public reception point in Logroño, one of the most important stages of the French Way.

Its closure forces pilgrims to look for alternatives in private accommodation or in nearby towns, something that is not always easy at times of high occupancy.
