The project «Back on the Road» intends to return to French Way of Saint James its original integrity, combating the overcrowding of certain sections and the abandonment of others. With the support of Ministry of Culture, this initiative seeks to highlight the historical and cultural importance of the route, declared World Heritage for the UNESCO in 1993. A MILLENNIUM LEGACY IN DANGERThe French Way of Saint James, a symbol of cultural exchange between the Iberian Peninsula and Europe, faces modern challenges. According to data from the Pilgrim's Office, many walkers travel only the minimum necessary to obtain the Compostela, which has led to an imbalance in the use of the route.
José Alberto Morais, professor of the University of Leon and doctor in Art History, highlights: "The Camino is not just a journey, but a living testimony of our shared history." Morais will inaugurate the participatory days with a conference on the medieval monastic foundations in Bierzo.
RECOVERING THE ESSENCE
The project is structured in nine participatory days which will take place between March and May in key locations along the Camino. These sessions seek to involve the local population in reflecting on the meaning of belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage.
