A tribute full of emotion reminds us that the Camino de Santiago is also built from history, memory and love for the land.
Not all pilgrims walk with a backpack.
Some do it with books, with research, with years of silent dedication. And they leave a mark that, even if it is not seen on the road, remains forever.
Today Santander and the Caminos de Cantabria have paid a very special tribute to one of those people: José Luis Casado Soto, recognized this year as “Pilgrim of Life” by the Association of Friends of the Caminos de Santiago.
A recognition that goes far beyond a title.

A legacy that transcends time
José Luis Casado Soto was not only a historian. He was someone who dedicated his life to discovering, protecting and sharing the secrets of the sea, Cantabria and its identity.
Their work not only enriched knowledge, but also helped to better understand the cultural value of roads, traditions and everything that is part of our history.
Because the Camino is not just a physical route.
It is also memory.

In this emotional act, Santander wanted to leave its mark with the delivery of the “Pilgrim Rose”, a symbol that represents those who have lived the Camino from a deep, committed and lasting perspective.
You don't have to travel kilometers to be a pilgrim.
Sometimes, it is enough to dedicate an entire life to taking care of what the Camino represents.
The Camino is also investigated, protected and loved
This tribute leaves a clear and powerful message: the Camino de Santiago is not only done on foot.
It is done by research.
It is done by teaching.
It is done by defending the culture and identity of the territories through which it passes.
And in that, figures like José Luis Casado Soto have been fundamental.
Thanks to people like him, today we better understand what the Camino really means.

A moment that moved everyone
During the ceremony, the memory of his figure was very present. Not only in the words, but in the emotion of those who knew him and in the respect of those who recognize his legacy.
It was a simple act, but full of meaning.
One of those that are not forgotten.
When the memory is still alive
There are people who, even after leaving, continue walking with us.
They are still in the places they helped protect.
They continue in the stories they left.
They follow every step of those who continue the path.
José Luis Casado Soto is, without a doubt, one of them.
The true meaning of the Way
This tribute reminds us of something essential:
The Camino is not just about getting to Santiago.
It's everything we leave in the way of others.
And there are traces... that time can never erase.
