Santiago is overflowing with pilgrims! Break all the records

Crowded plaza in front of a grand, ornate cathedral with stone steps and a blue sky above. People are walking and sitting around the square.

The Galician capital is experiencing a historic influx while the Camino de Santiago continues to grow at a pace never seen before

Santiago de Compostela once again writes a historical page. He Camino de Santiago It is going through one of the most successful moments of its entire existence and the Galician capital is experiencing a veritable flood of pilgrims from the five continents. The streets of the historic center, the Plaza del Obradoiro and the Pilgrim's Office register incessant activity during these first days of summer, confirming that the Jacobean pilgrimage continues to break records year after year.

The figures reflect a continuous growth of the Jacobean phenomenon. After closing 2025 with more than 530,000 pilgrims, the best data in history, everything indicates that 2026 will once again maintain extraordinary levels of participation, driven by the growing international interest in traveling the different routes that lead to the Cathedral of Santiago.

Santiago lives a historic summer

Whoever walks through Santiago these days will see that the Camino is more alive than ever.

From early in the morning, groups of pilgrims arrive at the Obradoiro with backpacks, walking sticks and shells, many of them excited after completing hundreds of kilometers on foot, by bicycle or even on horseback.

The image is constantly repeated: hugs in front of the Cathedral, photographs next to kilometer zero of the Camino and long lines to collect the Compostela, the document that officially certifies the pilgrimage.

The Pilgrim's Office receives visitors of dozens of nationalities every day, reflecting the enormous international appeal that the Camino de Santiago continues to awaken.

More and more foreign pilgrims arrive

One of the great changes experienced by the Camino in recent years is the spectacular growth of international pilgrims.

Currently, foreign walkers already outnumber Spaniards and come from countries such as the United States, Italy, Germany, Portugal, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico and Australia.

This phenomenon has turned the Camino de Santiago into one of the greatest world references of the cultural tourism, he active tourism and the religious tourism, generating an important economic impact for Galicia and for all the autonomous communities through which the Jacobean routes run.

The French Way is still the king

Although there are more and more options to get to Santiago, the French Way It continues to be the route most chosen by pilgrims.

They follow him Portuguese Way, he Portuguese Coastal Way, he English Way, he Primitive Path, he North Road and the Silver Way, itineraries that also experience constant growth thanks to the improvement of infrastructure, shelters and services for walkers.

This diversification is making it possible to better distribute the flow of pilgrims and discover new areas with enormous historical, natural and gastronomic heritage.

Success also poses new challenges

The growth of the Camino de Santiago is great news for tourism and the local economy, but it also poses important challenges.

The high influx forces us to reinforce the capacity of the hostels, improve the cleanliness of roads, expand services for pilgrims and protect the historical heritage of cities such as Santiago de Compostela.

In recent months, the debate on coexistence between neighbors and visitors has also intensified, especially during the high season, when thousands of people arrive daily in the historic center of Compostela.

A phenomenon that does not stop growing

Far from being a passing fad, the Camino de Santiago continues to establish itself as one of the great travel experiences in the world.

Every year more people decide to travel one of the Jacobean itineraries for spiritual, cultural, sporting or personal reasons.

For many it is a physical challenge; For others, an opportunity to disconnect, meet new people or start a new stage in their lives.

Whatever the motivation, they all end up sharing the same destination: the Plaza del Obradoiro and the excitement of seeing the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago for the first time.

The Camino looks to the future

Forecasts indicate that growth will continue in the coming years.

Jacobean administrations and associations work to improve the experience of pilgrims, promote lesser-known routes and guarantee sustainable development that allows the essence of the Camino to be preserved.

Meanwhile, Santiago continues to receive hundreds of new walkers every day who arrive with the same enthusiasm as medieval pilgrims: to reach the tomb of the Apostle Santiago and be part of a tradition with more than a thousand years of history.
