Ponferrada promotes the return of one of the greatest treasures of the Camino de Santiago and Bercian heritage
One of the most emblematic pieces of the medieval history of the Camino de Santiago He could very soon return to the land where he was born more than a thousand years ago. The City Council of Ponferrada and the Bishopric of Astorga have started talks to ensure that the historic Peñalba Cross, considered one of the great symbols of El Bierzo, returns to the region and can be exhibited in the future museum of the Encina Basilica. The initiative has sparked enormous enthusiasm among neighbors, historians and lovers of cultural heritage.
Currently, the Peñalba Cross is preserved in the León Museum, where it has remained since the end of the 19th century. However, for years numerous Bercian institutions have defended that this jewel of medieval art should return to its place of origin, as it is deeply linked to the history, identity and heritage of Bierzo.

A unique gem of the history of the Camino de Santiago
The Peñalba Cross is much more than a piece of goldsmithing.
It is a votive cross made in the 10th century and considered one of the most important works of Spanish Mozarabic art. According to historical tradition, it was given by the king Ramiro II of León to the abbot Saint Gennadius, responsible for the monastery of Santiago de Peñalba, as a token of gratitude after the Christian victory in the battle of Simancas, fought in the year 939 against the army of Abderramán III.
For centuries it remained in the monastery of Santiago de Peñalba, one of the most important monastic enclaves in the northwest of the peninsula and located in the heart of the Tebaida Berciana, very close to the historic Camino de Santiago.
Its enormous artistic, religious and historical value has made it one of the most important pieces of Leonese heritage.
The symbol of an entire region
For the Bercians, the Peñalba Cross represents much more than a historical object.
His silhouette appears on the official shield and on the flag of El Bierzo, becoming one of the main symbols of identity of the entire region. Generations of Bercians have grown up identifying this cross with their history, their roots and their cultural heritage.
Precisely because of this strong emotional bond, for decades different cultural associations, institutions and citizen groups have requested that the cross be returned to Bierzo, at least through a permanent or long-term transfer.
The new museum of the Basílica de la Encina opens an opportunity
The possible return of the Peñalba Cross is linked to the new cultural project that Ponferrada is preparing.
The City Council and the Diocese of Astorga have recently signed an agreement to launch the new museum and viewpoint of the Basílica de la Encina, whose management will fall to the Ages of Man Foundation, one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in Spain in the conservation and dissemination of religious heritage.
During the presentation of the project, both the mayor of Ponferrada, Marco Morala, and the deputy mayor, Iván Alonso, publicly expressed their willingness to work to ensure that the Peñalba Cross can be exhibited in this new museum space.

A boost for cultural and religious tourism
If the cross finally returns to Bierzo, it will be an important attraction for the cultural tourism, he religious tourism and the Camino de Santiago.
Every year, thousands of pilgrims cross Ponferrada following the French Way towards Santiago de Compostela. The possibility of contemplating one of the most important pieces of Spanish medieval art would make the city an even more attractive stop for visitors interested in history, heritage and spirituality.
In addition, it would reinforce the value of the monastery of Santiago de Peñalba and the entire Tebaida Berciana, one of the most unique cultural landscapes in Castilla y León.
A historical claim
The request to recover the Peñalba Cross is not new.
For years, Bercian institutions have approved different initiatives demanding its return, considering that the piece is part of the historical identity of the region.
Although legal custody continues to correspond to the Museum of León, the new museum of the Basílica de la Encina could open the door to institutional agreements that would allow its transfer for exhibition in Ponferrada.
Heritage that unites history and pilgrimage
The history of the Peñalba Cross is closely linked to the birth of the Kingdom of León, the cult of the Apostle Santiago and the development of one of the most emblematic territories of the Camino.
Recovering it would mean not only the return of an extraordinary work of art, but also the recovery of a symbol deeply rooted in the collective memory of Bierzo.
While conversations continue between the institutions involved, thousands of Bercians hope that one of the greatest treasures in its history can finally return to the place where it began more than a thousand years ago.
