A Mexican, pilgrim 500,000 of 2026!!!

Guadalupe Idalia Goicoechea Salinas, a Mexican pilgrim, has become number 500,000 on the Camino de Santiago in 2026. She arrived in Compostela after walking the French Way from Sarria with her husband and son.

The Camino de Santiago has just reached one of the most symbolic figures of the year.

The Pilgrim Reception Office delivered this Sunday the Compostela number 500,000 of 2026, confirming that the Camino once again exceeds half a million pilgrims for the second consecutive year.

The protagonist of this historical moment is Guadalupe Idalia Goicoechea Salinas, a Mexican pilgrim who made the French Way from Sarria accompanied by her husband, Enrique, and her son Luis.

A family story that ended up becoming, almost without expecting it, one of the images of the Jacobean season.

The archbishop personally gave him the Compostela

Guadalupe's arrival in Santiago also had a particularly symbolic moment.

The Archbishop of Santiago, Francisco Prieto, was in charge of personally delivering the 500,000th Compostela to him before the beginning of the Pilgrim's Mass.

For a family that had begun the Camino like thousands of pilgrims every year, the arrival thus became an unexpected event.

It is not every day that a pilgrimage ends up being part of the historical statistics of the Camino de Santiago.

A Mexican family on the French Way

Guadalupe walked the Camino accompanied by two of the most important people in her life.

Her husband, Enrique.

And his son, Luis.

The three chose Sarria as their starting point, one of the most common locations among those who want to complete the last kilometers of the French Way to Santiago.

From there they traveled through Galicia until they reached the Plaza del Obradoiro and completed their pilgrimage.

What they probably couldn't imagine when they started walking was that one of their Compostelas would end up bearing the number 500,000 of the year.

El Camino once again exceeds half a million

The figure once again confirms the enormous dimension that the pilgrimage to Santiago has reached.

In 2025, 530,844 pilgrims, a record number.

Now, at the beginning of October 2026, the Camino has already reached 500,000.

And there are still several weeks left in the season.

Everything indicates, therefore, that last year's record may be surpassed again before the end of 2026.

More and more international pilgrims

The history of Guadalupe also represents another of the great transformations of the Camino de Santiago.

More and more pilgrims arrive from outside Spain.

The United States, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Mexico and numerous Latin American countries have an increasingly visible presence on the Jacobean routes.

For many international pilgrims, the Camino has become a cultural, spiritual and personal experience that completely transcends Spanish borders.

The arrival of a Mexican woman as pilgrim number 500,000 symbolizes precisely that international dimension.

Mexico and the Camino de Santiago

Interest in the Camino is also growing in Latin America.

There are more and more associations, groups of pilgrims and projects linked to Santiago in countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia or Chile.

Many of those who complete the Camino for the first time later return to their countries and maintain the link with the pilgrimage.

Some come back.

Others help new pilgrims.

And others are even beginning to develop local routes inspired by the Jacobean model.

A huge number, a small story

Talking about 500,000 pilgrims can seem almost abstract.

Half a million people.

Half a million credentials.

Half a million arrivals to Santiago.

But behind each figure there is a different story.

On this occasion, the number 500,000 belongs to a Mexican woman who walked with her husband and son.

One more family among thousands.

And perhaps therein lies one of the most special characteristics of the Camino.

The statistics can be huge.

But the Camino always ends up being something deeply individual.

The next record is already on the way

If the pace of arrivals continues during October, November and December, 2026 could close with a new all-time high.

The proximity of Xacobeo 2027 adds even more expectation.

The next Holy Year will arrive with pilgrimage figures that a few years ago seemed difficult to imagine.

The challenge now will be to manage that growth without losing the essence that has turned the Camino into a different experience.

Meanwhile, the figure of 500,000 already has a name.

Guadalupe Idalia Goicoechea Salinas.

A Mexican pilgrim who left Sarria with her family and ended up entering, without looking for it, into the recent history of the Camino de Santiago.
