Via da Prata needs extra attention to guarantee a safer road.

Ancient stone road with large cobbles leading to a ruined arch and distant hills under a cloudy sky, fenced archaeological site on both sides.

A study identifies 484 points where signalization can be reinforced in the province of Zamora

To historical Via da PrataOne of the great Jacobean routes that crosses the Iberian Peninsula from south to north, faces a new challenge: better orientation and safety for pilgrims.

A study carried out over the course of the journey in the province of Zamora identify 484 points where the signal is insufficient, confusing or in need of updating, evidencing the need to reinforce one of the longest and most emblematic breaks of the Camino de Santiago.

A historic broken piece of enormous value

Via da Prata is much more than a simple pilgrimage route.

It is an ancient communication route used since Roman times, which continues to carry thousands of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The route crosses some of the most important cities and landscapes in the west of the Peninsula, linking the south of Spain to the French Road em Astorga ou ao Caminho Sanabrês in Moreruela Farm.

In addition to its historical importance, it stands out for its monumental heritage, its natural wealth and the authenticity of many of its villages and villages.

Sinalization: essential for the pilgrim experience

The specialists are responsible for studying more than 140 kilometers of the itinerary in Zamora, documenting crossings, detours, frames and other elements related to the orientation of walkers. The overall result is positive, but it also reveals the need to modernize certain stretches and reinforce points where pilgrims may feel doubtful about the correct path.

Among the areas that need special attention are some urban accesses, road crossings and areas where the signalization has been deteriorated over time or due to climatic conditions.

Fewer pilgrims than others broken

Despite its enormous historical wealth, Via da Prata continues to receive a reduced number of pilgrims when compared to the French Way or the Portuguese Way.

Various specialists believe that better international promotion and a more modern infrastructure could help revitalize the area and attract new travelers interested in less crowded experiences.

Many pilgrims seek precisely what Via da Prata offers: tranquility, authenticity, long stages in contact with nature and a deep cultural heritage.

An opportunity for the future

As the constant growth of the Jacobean phenomenon is the approximation of Xacobeo 2027Several associations advocate that this is the ideal time to invest in the conservation and valorization of Via da Prata.

Better signaling, greater international promotion and support to the municipalities crossed by the broken ones are some of the measures considered essential to guarantee that this historic road continues to play an important role in the universe of the Caminho de Santiago.

Because these large routes are hardly measured by the number of pilgrims.

Medem-se also by the history that keeps me and the experiences that it offers to those who decide to follow them.
