The broken coast continues to conquer pilgrims from all over the world and reinforces its position among the most sought after Jacobean itineraries
O Portuguese Coastal Road Continue to live two of the most important moments in your story. The most recent data confirm a trend that we see consolidating in recent years: this Jacobean variant maintains a constant growth and turns into one of the most sought-after fractures of the pilgrims that follow in the direction of Santiago de Compostela.
Over the last decade, its growth was truly impressive. The itinerary passed from about 2,600 pilgrims in 2016 to approximately 90,000 in 2025, transforming the number of routes that are growing throughout the entire network of the Caminho de Santiago.

The success of this breakdown depends on several factors. The route combines the charm of the Atlantic coast with accessible stages, dazzling maritime landscapes and passage through historic towns in Portugal and Galiza. This combination has attracted more and more national and international pilgrims.
The data also shows strong internationalization. The pilgrims coming from two USA, da Germany and from several other European countries we are among the most numerous groups that travel to Santiago. In some periods of 2026, North Americans will lead the same number of pilgrims on the Caminho Português da Costa.
Another two aspects that explain its success is its proximity to the sea. Contrary to other more interior routes, the Caminho da Costa offers beaches, cliffs, fishing ports and panoramic views that provide a different and highly valued experience for walkers.
As Xacobeo 2027 increasingly closer, expectations point to new participation records. The tourist authorities and the Jacobean associations consider that this route will be one of the great protagonists of the next Holy Compostela Year, contributing to the international development of Galiza and the Camino de Santiago.
More than a simple alternative to the Caminho Português Central, or Caminho Português da Costa consolidated its own identity. It is a mature, international and increasingly valued network because it seeks to combine spirituality, culture, heritage and unique landscapes.
For thousands of pilgrims, along the Atlantic waves around them, it is an essential part of the experience of walking to Santiago.
